The Clariosophic and Euphradiaii societies of the South Carolina college will have a joint debate on Wednes day evening, the 21st. We notice that Mr. J. H. Montgomery, of this county, is assigned the distinguished position of representing -the Euphradians in the contest. The Cheraw Reporter appeared last week enlarged to a seven column sheet .d greatly improved in appearance. We congratulate our contemporary on this evidence of prosperity. It is a meritorious publication desering success. Messrs. Legg & Hutchinson will leave this week for Tennessee and will return about the middle of January with a-car-loa-l of fine mules and horses. Their success in trading dar ing the hs. two months has been al luost pheuonina, having sold out a large drove of horses and mules. The merit of RrD Mar ToBACco is conceded by the attempts to imitate it. But don't be deceived. Ask for the water melon tag. The next quarterly conference of the Manning Methodist church will be held on Saturday and Sunday, the 17th and 18th. Rev. J. S. Beaseley, the presiding elder, will preach Satur day morning and again on Sunda. Mr. Beaseley is also expected to preach Sunday night in the Presby tertan church. It is conspicuous from any point you look on account of the decorations of fagging and attractive arrangement of the fruit. He sells for a nickle and forten cents all the fruit you can eat aipd gives to his best customers a beautiful pictured card with "Dray ton's Fruit 'Stand" neatly printed thereon. -The treasurer's office is beseiged now every day with a large crowd clamoring to pay their taxes. We un derstand that it will be more than the treasurer and his clerk can do to re ceive all the taxes by the 15th that are now unpaid. .This is due to the fact of everybody putting off to pay taxes to the last day. Procrastinastion may steal time but not taxes. They have to be paid sooner or later and always later with the penalty. So procrasti nation not only steals time but the tax-payer's money. Law preached in the Presbyterian church last Saturday and Sunday, assisting the pastor in his communion meeting. Large congre gations attended the services and were much impressed with the simple earn est presentation of the Truth by the minister. The usual morning service in the Methodist church was dispens ed with in order that the congrega tion .might enjoy with their Presbyte rian brethren the communion in that church. At night Rev. Mr. Law con ducted the union meeting in the Methodist church. The church was illed with a respectful attentive au dience. Fine Strawberry Plants for sale 50 cents a hundred., Jons A. Bunozss. A Call from the Dead, A meeting of the citizens of this town and county who are interested in our cemetery is appointed for Tues day the 27th inst., in the co:urt-house. -This place which should be of the deepest concern to every one, and re eive the attention of a choce flower garden, is grown up into almost a wilderness, and the street leading there is next kin to impassable with rank weeds. Its condition is a great and crying shame to our town and county. Those interested in this matter will please attend the meeting next Tues day and assist in devising some -means by which the place of our dead can be cared for. Have you a bad cough or- cold? On the evening of the 7th, the fol lowing telegram was received by Sher iff Lesesne from Kingstree: "Arrest C. H. Shembrell or any one calling at express office for money package from A. J. Salineas & Son on draft from Benjamin Bros." J. A. KEEYr. By the next mail Mr. N. A. Hall re ceived this letter which explains the telegram: December 7th, 1887. N. A. Hall, Esq., Manning, S. C. Danui Sm: Am informed by A. J. Salineas & Son, of Charleston, S. C., party by name of C, S. Chembrel has sent a draft purporting to be drawn by us on A. J. Salineas & Son for sum of $250, that he has sent them the draft, asking of them to forward the package of money to Manning, S. C. This draft is a forgery. In the inter est of law and order, take the necessa ry steps and have arrested any one who calls at express office in that name for that amount of money. Move quietly in the matter and advise us by telegraph. Very truly, BF .mm BRos, per Hirsch. The telegram and letter was caused by some one giving his name as C. H. Schembrell attempting to torge a draft of Benjamin Bros., of Kingstree, on A. J. Salineas & Son, of Charleston. The draft was sent by mail with a letter di recting the Messrs. Salineas to ex press the money to Manning. T!'is request aroused suspicion and Benja min Bros were telegraphed, and the forgery discovered. Immediately the notifications above were sent out. The matter was kept quiet and nothing oc curred until Saturday when a man en tered the depot, thinking the express office was there, and asked for an ex press package for C. H. Schembrell. He was told where to find the officer and Mr. Hall, the depot agent, hasten ed up town to notify the sheriff. He did not go directly to the express of fice and the sheriff arrested him in a crowd on the square fronting the Court-house. The sheriff says be ac costed him as Mr..Schembrell and he seemed very much startled and said his name was D. A. Reardon. He was carried first to the guard-house and fron there conveyed to the county jail, where he now is awaiting a war rant from Charleston. Reardon denies all knowledge of the forgery and says he was asked by a man a stranger, whom he had never seen, to enquire at the express office for a package for C. H. Schembrell. He said he was to keep the money until the man called for it. His tale is very confused and contains no ex planation unless he can find the miss ing Schembrell. M. J. Hirsch, Esq., and Mr.- Benjamin, of Kingstree, were in town Monday for the purpose of holding a preliminary in Reardon's case, but the trial justice here very proprly refused to sit in the matter as the locus in quo of the crime is in Charleston county. Reardon is the son of Mr. Daniel E. Eeardon, a very respectablel citizen of Slem, who has the warmest sympa hy of our citizens in his distress. Bible Society. The Rev. Mr. Law who is the can assing agent in this State and North Carolina for the American Bible Soci ety, of New York, delivered an address in the Methodist church Sunday af ternoon in the interest of this society nd for the purpose of re-organizin~g he auxiliary branch formerly exsting here. The speaker exhibited a thor :ugh knowledge of his work; he prov ed that the American Bible Society is the greatest factor in the land for dis seminating the Gespel and without its assistance the best efforts of the Churches and their ministers, weaken ed for the want of means, would prove abortive in their missionary labors. At the conclusion of the address thir ty-five names were secured and the following officers were elected : Pres ident, Rev. H. M. Mood; Vice-Presid ents, 1;evs. T. J. Rouke, and James McDowell; Treasurer, Mr. J. T. Stukes; Secretary, Mr. R. S. Connor; Executive Committee, the offices elect ed and Messrs. J. W. McLeod, James . Davis, and B. S. Dinkins. The interest manifested in the aux iliary society is indicative that great good will be accomiplished in this county. When the membership in ereses and the organization is in thor ough working order a colporter will be put in the field to canvass the coun ty visiting every househol and sell a Bible where there is none at the cost of publishing, and where the house hold is too poor to buy one, a Bible will be given away. It is proposed to carry on this good work uzftil there is not a home in the borders of Claren don county without the Word of God. On Monday the Executive Commit tee met in the ofliee of the Clerk of the Court, and arranged and planned the work of the Society for the next year. An order for Bibles was made through Rev. Mr. Law. The drug store of Messrs. W. E. Brown & Co., was selected as the depository for the books, with Mr. E. E. Dickson, depos itary. It wvas ordered that the Socie t meet annually and the next nmeet i~ng appointed for about the middle of December 1868. An address on the Bible will be delivered then by some minister or layman to be elected for (the purpose. ~The Executive Com mittee will meet again in March. A Festive Day at Panola on the 29th Instant. The good people of the Panola neihborhood are preparing with great (enthusiasm to paint that portion of the county red on the occasionof the opening of their beautiful Academy, which takes place on the 29th instante Addresses will be delivered by Gov ernor Richardson, and the Superin tendent of Education, Colonel Rice. The splendid cavalry commands. with that superb corps, the Manning Guards, will be out to do honor to his Excellency, and will be reviewed and inspected by him. This fine display of our military will be highly gratify ing to the Governor and a compliment that he richly merits, for he has been their best friend at court and warm supporter at all times. The ladies have seized the oppor tunity to spread a real Christmas feast of fat turkey, barbecued mutton and pork with delightful fresh country sau sages served piping hot with rice ditto. The proceeds from this array of Xmas goodies will be applied to furnishing the Academy. We trust and feel assured that eve ry man, woman, and child in the coun ty who can secure transportation that day will be early on the grounds to show their proper appreciation of what has been so handsomely accoma plished for the great cause of educa tion, and to give our distinguished visitors an old Clarendon welcome.
