There are seven prisoners in jail, already, awaiting trial at the next term of the Circuit Court. Our correspondents have apparent ly forgotten us. What is ailing, friends? Give us the news from the various 1 sections of the county. The first page of our outside is fill ed with news of the State Fair and other meetings in Columbia last week. It is worth reading. His "dots" were mislaid last week, and a careful hunt has not thus far revealed their hiding place. Les esne again in town. The position offered him near St. Mathews, he says, did not come up to his especta tions, and he returned home. A pleasant smoke can be had by using Form BRos. The State Baptist Convention will meet in Sumter on the first of Decem ber; and. the Annual Conference of the South Carolina Methodist Church, will convene in Spartanburg about the 24th inst. Mr. J. E. Thigpen has bought the dwelling known as the Lucas house, now occupied by Mr. D. H. Wither spoon. He will move his family into town about the first of the year. Mr. Thigpen and family will be heartily welcomed by ourcitizens, to Manning. BED MELT Tomncco. Our town is excited over the "Red Meat Tobacco." The best known. Ask for it. Mr. H. B. Thomas, of Wedgfield, is a pronounced supporter of Capt. B. R. Tillman. Mr. Thomas is engineerring f the movement in Sumter county, and says he will invite Capt Tillmanm to< address the farmers of Sumter, on tbe1 21st of INovember. Uip to this'date claims amounting to $5,910.65 have been approved and registered by the Board of County Commissioners. By the.time -howev er, all claims against the county are approved, with the jury tickets, the above amount will be increased to about $7,000 or more. The Board will meet again on the 22nd. New Zion, Thursday, December 8. The State Fair afforded pick-pock ets a profitable field. Numbers of persons had their pockets picked, and in some instances large amounts were stolen. Dr. John I. Ingram, of this county,was robbed of $40 by one of the light-fingered gentry. Even a miniter's cloak was no protection againsttheir raids. We learn that Rev. Mr. Edmunds, of Sumter, lost his pocket-book, containing $6.00, in this- way. -A. J. Campbell, white, who escaped jail several months ago, was arrested last week about a mile from town. It seems that he has never left the coun ty, but ha. been staj'ing at night with his wife and her relatives, and lying ontin the day. The sheriff got an intimation-of his.'whereabouits the ear ly part of last week, and Friday night. deputy 3. C. Harvin succeeded in ap prehending and lodging him in jail. C. C. We are requested to announce that he will preach next Sunday at Dudley's Sta tion. This is one of the Churches of which he was the pastor before leav ing this county for Greenville. Mr. N. A. Hall, the depot agent at this place, is within himself a manu factory for telegraph operators. He has already fitted several young men to take charge of offices, and now has a large class that he will soon turn out full fledged operators. Fortunate for the young gentlemen who enjoy Mr. Hall's tuition, his exceeding populari ty with his employers enables him to ecure subordinate positions for all of his graduated pupils. The following prescription for pep Der burns, recommended by a young ady of experience, is furnished gratu tously to our readers, who are wel 'ome to test its efficacy whenever the )ccasion demands: "Immediately af er the pepper begins to make itself elt, take shelter in the most conven ent hen coop. - Stay there in a stand ng position only a few minutes and he worst torture from this cause w.il >e relieved." The merit of RED MEAT TOBAccO is onceded by the attempts to imitate t. But don't be deceived. Ask for he water-melon tag. Captain W. D. Fitch showed us a ew days ago a pocket knife which was round in the gizzard of a large turkey obbier killed at bis place. The knife s three and a half inches long and Lbout the size of an ordinary knife. The handle is made of dark colored born and trimmed with bright metal it each end, which no doubt caused he turkey to take it for some kind of insect. The handle of the knife shows signs of having been wasted by diges tion. The turkey was healthy and rat. Capt. Fitch's mother lost the knife that was found as above stated. [t is curious how such a large, hard instrument could be swallowed by a turkey, and how it could survive with it in his gizzard.-County Record. A festival or hot supper will be giv en at the Grange Hall on Monday avening the 28th inst, for the benefit f the Calvary Baptist Church. The ladies of this church will have the feast in charge and propose to provide bountifully of edibles to satisfy the ost fastidious palate. The bill of are will consist, first, of roast turkey with cranberry sauce, turkey stuffed with oysters, woodcock and snipe and :artridge served with spinage, duck, goose, peafowl, venison, pork, beef, nutton, kid, etc., etc. The second iervice will consist of syllabub and herbet and jelly and ice-cream with ~ake, maltrimony, .floating island, >lanch mange, ambrosia, pies and ev ~rything else a dainty appetite night desire. A good time, a jolly ;ime, a happy time will be enjoyed by al who attend. The public, young nd old, are cordially invited to be oresent. Doors open promptly at 7:30 'clok Admission free. Clarendon Circuit. (Sothern Christian Adv'ocate.1 We have held four protracted meetings. Some of these meetings were gracious sea ons of refreshing from the Lord. Twenty hree joined the Church, and about fifeen were converted. We have raised during the rear $4.62 to liquidate a debt on New Zion Ld $10.75 to get lamps for Shiloh.
