The prohibition law, of Maine, has
received a rude and unexpected set
back by one Michel Burns, of Augusta,
Me., who brought to that city from
Liverpool, a large invoice of foreign
distilled liquors which he is dealig A
out promiscuously. Burns bases his
conduct on the polity of the . ited .
'States government, which protects:
all persons importing liquors frow
foreign countries from prosecution',C
under any State prohibitory law for
selling such goods in the origin'
unbroken package. The liquors, ()l
sisting of Irish whiskey, and Jaia
rum, reached Augusta by way of the,;
Portland Custom House. They wer
hauled through the streets on carts
before the staiing eyes of police and
citizens. Burns has his storspaked
with the goods. They are piled up in.
his waidows before the admiring gaze
of all opoents of the proliibitory
law. --ley all being retailed at low
prices within easy rea:>h of the puir
chasing public. Everybody is sur
prised at the affair, and all the lawyers
in the town have been employe t t'
look up the law on the s:ue of import
ed liquors in their original packages.
