had the same name, and it is said,

The new Baptist Church at Lanes,

Rev. Henry M. Mood has been ap
pointed by the Conference to the
Manning station in the place of Rev.
S. Leard, who is superannuated. The
Rev. S. Leard has the warmest love
of his Church and the community
genesaily, all of whom regret his re
tirement from this pastorate. How
ever, its a pleasure to learn that he
'will still reside among us.
Died last Sunday morning, Miss
Allen Ridgill, daughter of Mr. N. A.
Ridgill. Miss IRidgill was an estima
ble young lady, possessing many lov
able traits that endeared her to a
large number of friends and acquaint
ances. When the dread summons
reached her, she was just ripening in
to a most promising womianhood.
The funeral services were conduted
by Rev. W. H, Mahoney, in the Man
ning Baptist Church, Monday, after
which the remains were laid away in
the cemetery here.

sioners took the oath of office Mon
day, administered by Mr. C. L. With
erspoon, chairman of the retiring
Board, and immediately assumed con
trol of the Commissioners' office. The
choice of a chairman fell on Mr. F.
C. Horton. Mr. J. G. Huggins, the
efilcient clerk of the old Board, was
re-elected.
The School Commissioners' office
has been turned over by Capt. J. J.
Conyers to Lis successor, Maj. P. G.
Benbow.
Mr. L. Appelt now has the admin
istration of the Probate's office on
his hands.

On last Thursday the Trial Justice
iere was engaged in hearing a very
ovel case, and we might add, an im
oortant one. About a year ago the
,ounty Commissioners ordered open
)d a new road leading to Summerton.
[t seems from what followed that a
arge number of the citizens of this
'ownship, Concord, failed to see the
dvertisement posted by the Com
missioners. When the overseer of
:his Township ordered the road hands
;o appear and work this road, about
ye hundred and fifty, in fact nearly
dl the citizens of the Township, ref us
d to obey. The overseer reported
he matter to the Tial Justice and
warant was issued for twenty-four
f the hands. They were arrested
td the trial camne off Thursday. it
,vas proven that the road was regular
y opened, and that the defendents
were warned etc., and openly disre
arded the law. The verdict of the
ury summoned to try the case was
'not guilty." We can only account
or the verdict on the ground that the
sentment created by 150 or 200 men
nfluenced the opinicn of the Jury.

No doubt the Fair this season will be
more successful than any in the past.
Extensive preparations are being made
on a large scale to enternain the visitors,
who expect to attend the Fair,
In addition to the abeve attraction I will
take phasnre in entertaining visitors at the
Emuoinum of Fashin, with an exhibition
of fashionable clothing for men and boys.
The display of men's garments are artisti
cally arranged so as to give the visitor the
opportunity of finding the style garment he
may need without looking over the whole
stock. On entering the manimoth estab
lishment, to your right you will find a hand
some line of Gents' Furnishing Goods; this
department consists of shirts, laundried and
unlaundried, of every description, half
hose in plain and fancy. collars, cuffs, gloves,
handkerchiefs, suspenders, and an elegant
line of gents' neck-wear.
To your left is the hat department, where
you will find all the latest styles and shapes
of soft and stiff hats, awaiting your inspect
ion; also a beautiful line of silk umbrellas,
with gold and silver handles.
Then in the center of this lar'ge store you
will find the counters loaded with choice
suits for men and youths, of every style,
pattern, and quality of goods.
Near the center you come to the cutaway
suits, in whip cord, cork screw, cheviots and
fancy cassimeres.
Then still moving on you come to the
counters filled with double breasted frock
coats and vests. After passing this stock
you are lead into the boys' department,
which is entirely separate from the other
department. This stock of boys and child
ren's clothing is not surpassed by any in
the city or State. Tne display far exceeds
any of my past endeavors in making this at
traction for the boys and their mothers.
The styles and textures of these goods can
not be found elsewhere in the city. Those
who have visited this department are more
than pleased with the stock. Just opposite
to the boys' department you will find a line
of gents' fine shoes, which can be had in
any style or shape that you may need. I
keep none but the leading makes in this
stock. Remember you can find them in all
grades. Those who want fine shoes will
