'You are about the only one in the State who does not want to be Gov ern~or. The motion for a new trial in the case of the seven Anarchists, convict ed not long since in Chicago, has had a hearing and been denied. Some who were opposed to capital punish ment, had hoped that there might be a new trial-not that they believed the accused innocent, but because it is too severe a tax on human sympa thy to contemplate the hangiiig of seven men. Was it not equally as se ice a task upon your sympathy gen .tlemen, to contemplate that horrible mamacre of innocent men, brought about by this same seven ? What would prevent a recurrence of such, but the visitation of capital pun. ishment on the ring-leaders in the former. No, gentlemen, they have .been adjudged guilty before a tribu nal of twelve honest citizens, of the horrible deed of murder, and they should suffer the penalty of that law of man and God, which they have so rnthesly violated. There comes a flne when fidelity to justice, and mer - to the many, forbids our eyes to p$or our hands to spare the guilty. hsemen have brought it now. COURT PROCEEDINGS. Judge Wallace opened the Court Monday morning at 10 o'clock. There were fifeen Grand Jurors present. 'Tihe attention of the Court was called to Mr. 3. W.. Fleming, one of the grand jurors, who, since being drawn on the panel has appointed a Trial Justice. Although having served in this dual capacity at the last term of the Court, Mr. Fleming was request. ed to withdraw. The Judge's charge to the jury was brief, they having *been instructed as to their duty at previous terms of the Court. The first bill given out by the So licitor was the case of the State vs. Thomas Shannon, charged with the murder of William B. Barrow, the ac count of which was published at the time. The jury after remaining in their room about an hour returned with a true bill Mr. Shannon was arraigned and plead "not guilty." Through his counsel, to-morrow Ihsday) was set for the trial. True ilswere next returned in the follow is cases: Ludd Sanders, alias Mingo Craw lord, obtaining money by falso pre tenses. Jim Murphy, taking and using mule without consent of owner, and with out intent to steal same. John W. Addison. rape and assault with intent to ravish. Cuff McFaddin, carrying concealed weapons and aggravated assault and battery, The case against James Murphy was the first tried. Hle was defcnded by Rob't Stewart, Esq., colored, who elaborated extensively on the inno cence of his client, but tlie proof of guilt was too convincing for James' tale. The verdict of the jury contra dicted his statement, and the Court's sentence condemned him to the peni tentiary for six months. Jno W. Addison was next arraign ed. He plead "not guilt:-," and to day was appointed for his trial. The State failed to make out a case against Cuff McFaddin, and the jury, with the consent of the solicitor, re turned a verdict of not guilty. At this juncture the Grand Jury came into Court with two bills: one against Preston Conyers and the other against Charles Williams, both charged with selling whiskey without a license. Stewart, Esq., made an afidavit that he Lad a material witness to his de fense, who was abseilt, and his case wais consequently continued to the r-ext terni of the Court. Conyers, 01 being required to answyer, plead guil tv through his counsel, R. M. Thomp son, Esq. This case excited consid ,rable interest a1oDg the members of the a and the audience. True bills were returned agains I Spann Davis, chargcd with arson and Abram Bonbow, for an assault with intent to kill, upon Rachel Mc Duflie. Abram Beubow was the only part; tried to-day. Refutation of the Charges of Extrava gance Against the State Government Charges of corruption and extrav agance have been made against th State Government within the las twelve months. No one has believe< the charge of corruption, and it ha fallen flat and still-born. Some hav< been miisled by general charges of ex travagauce. But the speeches of Col I onel Richardson, candidate for Gov ernor, and the writings of those fa miliar with the facts, prove that ther is no foundation for such charges. - I what do they allege that the extrava gance exists~? Says someone, "in th< creation of new ofices." Let us se, what new offices have been created First, the Commissioner of Agricul ture. The fees of the offici are paid by litigants, and do not comn (oni of 1te cunty. The fees of refer ences are reduced by the establish ment of tis office, and the businesi othcorts is greatly facilitated 4th. The office of Supervisor of Reg istration has been created. The firs year this cost $17,000. Now it cost: about $3,500 a year. That's extrava gance with a vengeance. Is there at honest disingenuous man who wouli do away with the eight box law ani registration, and go back to the 01i ways of carrying elections? Well there have been no other officers cre ated that we remember, so there is n< extravagance there ! But it is sait appropriations are made for the Uni versity and the Citadel. That's true but how much ? In round numbers forty thousand dollars. And we saa on behalf of the poor boys of this State, that that is not extravagance but a grand and noble economy. Ani so it goes. The comparison has beer made between 1878 and subsequen yer based upon the tax levy foi those years. In 1878 the public deb1 of the State was under investigatioi in the courts and no interest thereor was levied. Since then the interesi has been collected and levied, and still the rate of taxation is not high It is wrong to fill our people witi the ilea that the government is un worthy of their support, when everyj fact anid figure proves that since 187( the governmnent has been honestly faithfully, and economically admiinis tered.--lrr/Hd, ildb'um.
