'Miss Pauline Dick, of Sumter, is at
Rev. James McDowell's.
Our coulnins are filled this week with (Capt.
Tillman's speech before the Agricultural So
ciety, which is published by reqnest.
It is rumored that Mr. Robert Machem
once ,well known in Manning a a good
printer, was foumd on last Thursday or Fri
day frozen to death.
Found by Mr. Chats. Reynolds a nickeled
key, which closes like a knife, near Mr. N.
A. Ridgil", on the public road lealing from
Packsville to Manning. The owner will
have his property restored on paying the
c.mt of this notice.
On December 28th, Mr. J. J. Bar
field, the keeper of the Poor House,
left home telling bis wife that he was
going to visit a neighbor near by, and
would return soon. This is the last
heard of Mr. Barfield, except a vague
rumor that oilhe evening of leavingr
1:ome he was seen at the . Manniug'
depot. J~aving alwayat borne a repui
table natme in the community, bis
friends are unable to account foir bis
strange condttct, and still hope that
he may yet turn up -from a trip of his'
own business.
A NARROW ESCAPE FOR AIKEN.
(Special Dispatce to The .Yetes ad (bmrier.) )
Arr, January 10.-A scrious tire
took place here to-day on Main street..
It occurred about 11.30 o'ekek, when
all the different congregations were
at their respective . churches. T he
bell at the town hal-gave the first!
alarm, and very soon throngs of citi
zens crowded the streets. The fire
ta'e place in the store of W. J. Mose
ly, Sr.. and soon spread -idly. It
appears that during yeste~ uy's severe
gale a portiorr of the chimney at tach
ed to Mosely's store was blown down.
He did not know. of this accident and
last night built a fire as usual In the
night the fire must have caught and
smouldered until to-day and broke
otati11.30 A M.
The Aiken Steam Engine was out
soona after the alarm of fire, but in con
sequence of the extreme severity of
the weather was all frozen up and
could not get to work until the fire
had been under way over three-quart
ers of an hour. Our fire company
and the citizens woiked bravely, and
it is due to their exertions that at least
one-half of the business portion of the
town was not burnt up. Help was
asked from Augusta, and soon a spec
ial train brought over an engine and
hose carriage withi a full complement
of men. This aid arrived too late to
be of much avail, but was duly appre
cated by our people, and in the event
of a general conflagration, which we
feared, would have enabled us to save
much property. Loss $48,400. In
surane$38,400.
Poison Oak.
1878, 1 was poisoned by contact
'th poisor.=ak. I put n yself under
he treatment of a homeopathic physi
cian in Mobile, who treated m~three
months with varying srecess, but no
cure. I then went wader treatmnent
of one of the prospmnent allopathic
physicians for monthis with no better
results. Then I fent to New York
N and secured the seririces of one of the
amost distinguish/d physicians there
who prescribed rme for weeks and
failed to give r f. I then went to
Phiadelphiia went under the care
of the celeb .Agnew for many
weeks, and ed no appreciable.

In I.Amyself under the
case est physicians, and
al comparative relief,
a End my power to
bear.. It seemed no matter what I
did, as if it were impossible to rid my.
self of the poison. In 1884, in Octo.
ber, when in desperation, but having
very little faith in it, I commenced
using Swift's Specific. After I had
taken a number of bottles, I felt that
my digestion and general health was
improved, but so far as I could tell the
poison was still in my system. After
I had finished the second dozen bot
iles I began to see a clange for the
better. Nearly every sign of my
dread affliction had disappeared, my
skin was clear and in its normal con
dition, and again I believed that I was
forever free from this terrible afflic
tion. I have now completed my forty
eighth bottle, and feel free again, with
no sign of any eruption but a few
pimples, which I believe to be the last
faint signs of the result of my terrible
blood poisoning. I cannot say too
much in praise of the S S. S.
