Just think; of it and come along and take advantage of the price while it lasts. ?- *, q ' It is very nice of the local -post of the American legion to give to each school a flag and also take it in person fhrough committees of the post and give a lecture on thaf aue^nhi;: and significance of the flag arnl the etiquette of the flag. Surely every board of trustees will provide a flag pole and the rope tb hoist the flag and then we feel sure that the teachcrj of the county will sec tl&ti. proper care is taken of the flag and the Aug lessons taught the children. You want to have a place in the Education edition of The Herald ami News and you should not wait even for the committees from the Civic association to call on you but yor should see them to be sure of a good place in the picture. __ The special Education edition of The Herald ard News is to bo of his tone value because we are gomg to devote a large portion of therendi'hg * space to historic matters pertaining to the schools of the county* We nope those who have promised articles fo:point lis oat let the articles be forthcoming as soon as possible. - this edition will not fail us or' disapYou know Newberry has just caus:v to be very proud of her public highways. They are fine and the upkeep has been as good as could be expected with the newness of the roads and the dry weather because with the car"dry weather is ss bad on the' highway as wet weather and in fact worsen^We need some cross reads now put -ir better shape and the commission v. doing that just as fast as it can be done. Let us all help. EDUCATION EDITION OF THE HERALD AND NEWS The Herald and News h:s under taken the. publication 01 an li.ducation edition of the paper on th2 i:t:l day of December, being the last before National Education te be observed throughout the country and fostered by the American Legion and the National Education association and the federal department of education as well as by th^,coufer? ence on education in this state, which was held in Columbia a few days ago. i A program for the week h-5.. been suggested and an effort will be made to have it carried to each school in Newberry county during the week,. The local post of the American lag'Or has already agreed to arrange the program and the speakers for Tuesday, December 5, and at each scha .1 in the county the committeeman yiits the school will present $ tfnitSd States flag, and the county-supefin-' tendent of education has promised or. behalf of the trustees that the flag pole and the rope necessary to hois; the flag will be furnished, and the pa-' trons and friends of the school are invited especially on this day to take part in the ceremonies, and it is hoped that in every district there will be sufficient interest to bring out all the people of the community. 1-| The purpose of the education edition of The Herald and News will be to publish 2 short story about each sohool, and the principals of all theschools have been requested to.furnish the article, or to have some on? write the story. And we would like to have a picture of the school bu'lding. Then we will publish short articles on educational tonics, and the ' idea will be. to make the paper mjiac^v 2nd ir. truth an educational edition".'; We have already received a mess:v?e to the people from Mr. J. J. Tigert, leaciiai connir.ssioner ui u :ai-ai:)n, and wo are hoping to have one from Mr. J. S. Swearingen and Mr. J. H. Hope, and from Rion M^Kissick as president of the educational conference, rnd from others who are interested in the education of the children , of the state. Tn's week is mainly to ' arouse an interest in the bettering of the educational advantages of the ru-: ral children, or the children of the ru-: ral schools, and to make a plea for . an equal opportunity for them in the matter of better schools and longer; terms. Why should not these chil, dren have an equal opportunity. As to the schedule for the week w~ j expec t that the other organizations i will assist in the arranging of the ' program and furnish some one to v:s-' it cach school. The program or itinerary will be published in the p.'.peri of the county. We have given the civic association of the city the privilege to solicit advertising for this issue, and all ads given them will be for their benefit, that is, a liberal commission is giver; them on all .business that comes through their representatives, and we will be very ghd to have it all come that way. Of course where we have contract advertising due that day it will be carried ojt as usual. The ladies have already sent committees to Chappells and Prosperity and Lktie Mountain. From the reports that we have received the business men of Little Mountain have appreciated the effort that is being made in the cause of education and have done their part well. But Prosperity will need another visit, because we are satisfied that the wide awake bus incss men of this progressive town do not fully understand the scope of this edition, ncr what it means for the educational development of this county. And Chappells needs another visit also. Pomaria and Whitmire will be visited. As you knew, The Herald and News has been somewhat disorganized in its mechanical department, but we are getting; in shape, and this statement is made o request all who are ment is made to request all who are take space in the advertising department, to send in their copy just as scon as possible. We are hoping to print several sections of the paper on that day. To do so we must print came of the sections '.n advance. We ask the cooperation of all the good people of Newberry in making this p:ner a crcdit to Newberry and a help to the cause of the proper education of the children of the county. "The children of today will be the architects of the destiny of our country tomorrow." What sort of building they make depend? largely upon the people of today. The responsibility is on us. Dcn't forget that Saturday is the last day we will sell The Herald and News for .a whole vear for onlv one dollar. Come r:?ht along raid take advantage cf this sale. It is as cheap as we can sell under postal regulations, one half the regular price. We hate to part with our friends. We have been here a long time and you nave been with us during many of the years and we want you'to remain, and that is the reason we -are giving this opportunity for ycu to catch up and get a start. Better attend to this at once. Tjffr Latest arrivals in Newberry, just arrived, two more fine boys, the first at the home cf Mr. and Mrs. T. S.
