L., Jr. New Orleans, Oct; 16 (By the Associated Press).?World war veterans here to attend the fourth annual convention of tie American l egion laid aside the cares of business tonight to indulge in reunions?to be "buddies" again, and to fight the war over again?verbally. 4They had heard their national commander, Hanford MacNider, reaffirm at the business session of the convention this morning the. determination of the legion to make.the welfare of the disabled veterans its chief interest. They also had listened to the report of their rehabilitation committee, which charged that the government's handling oi the disabled veterans from the time of the armistice was signed to the present,' hud bet ?-! a series of ''tragic mistakes, pulitics. alibis and blunders.'' and heard a defense by Col. C. R. Forbes of the veterans' bureau. The lighter side oCuhe meeting nowappealed to them. They heid no sessions during the afternoon, the veterans spending the rest of the day an J far into the night in impromptu reunions in the hotel lobbies, on the sidewalks, or wherever they met as the strains of "Mademoiselle From Armentieres" (the lady who hadn't been kissed for 5G years) drifted through the music of dozens of bands ?armv. navv and civilian Others adjourned to the historic Jackson square, in the heart cf th French quarter where they attended a fete in honor o? the visiting veterans. The delegates from Belgium, France, Great Britain, Rumania, Italy, Servia and Czecho-Slovakia aI?o were guests at the entertainment held on the spot where Jackson mustered his forces to fight back the British when he won the battle or New Orleans in 1815. The "buddies" eager to give expression to their .sentiments, r heatedly cheered the bronze equestrian statue of "Old Hickory." Regimental mascots of all descriptions?dogs with war records an-l mules adopted for 4he occasion? were led tnrough the streets by tno cheering- veterans. The fun, however, was good natuved and orderly. Various athletic events in which legionnaires from the different stat<* departments took part, featured iru* afternoon's program, and a b exhibition drew the attention of many veterans tonight. The great navy planes from Pensac-ola, here as a part of the naval program, flew over the city this afternoon while six destroyers and -he scout cruiser Birmingham anchored in the Mississippi within easy rowingdistance of the cnvention hall. it !)
