TO REVIVE DOMESTIC WEAVES
Movement in England to in a Measure
Restore System Which Preceded
Modern Factory.
A short time ago an Indian came
iii^o Lancashire from a training school
in Paris and promised a huue order
to anyone who could invent a single
hand-spinning spin<ile wirn an ai:;o
matie feeder of raw cotton. This was
to he used to help crush tin* factory
system of India l?y a revival and extension
of hand spinning, and with ir,
domestic weaving.
The idea should not l>e impossible,
but the difficulty of providing the
mechanism is to make ir light enough
In weight to he easily moved about,
also to make ir cheap enough for any
poor householder to purchase. India
has about 2.000.000 hand loom* employing
5.000.000 or G.000.0<(?> men.
women and children, consuming more
than 250.000.000 pounds of yar>is.
In England the art of domestic
weaving has been practically lost. It
was superseded nearly 100 years ago
by the rapid advance of the automatic
loom and the factory system. 15ut
there has been a suggestion recently
that some attempt should be made to
reintroduce domestic ^ caving on a
more mrftlem plan than that which has
been pushed out. Domestic hand-loom
weaving may still be found in isolated
places apd it has also been taken up
by disabled soldiers.
Hopes to Brirg Rain by Wireless.
Sir Oliver I.odge. England's veteran
scientist, knows how to play on the
imagination of his countrymen. On j
his seventy-first birthday he casually j
announced that much of hi> time is ue- j
voted to wireless research work, but
for th*e time being he shall keep the
results of his experiments dark, lie
believes that there is a great future
for broadcasting.
Being asked what he thinks is the
cause of England's protracted drought i
?last year was me anest ot a.i re- ;
corded Knglish summers, and there has
been some duplication of it this year.
"The atmosphere wains electrifying."
he said. "Some day. 1 have no doubt,
a method will he found t<> electrify the
atmosphere to produce rain at will.
It is one of my dreams of the future."
