^BREATHES THERE A WOMAN ?<
Woman's Department The State.
"Breathes there a man with soul so
dead
J-- v: if T ?
wno never to uimseix u<a-~ saiu,
This is my own, my native land!"
So >ang Sir Walter Scoii". |
Today if v;e knew how we d sing a
song like that to our women. We'd
sing ianaticallyl, "Breathes there a
woman with brains so dull that she j
can not see the gravity of rhe times;
but is willing to be a psrasite, enjoying
the benefits thrt come to all
through the efforts of other people,
and condemning the things that do
not suit them, but not lifting the little
finger to help?"
If there are sucn in South Carolina
they do not deserve the protection
of good government ?.nd what
we have is too good f:?r them.
We believe ever rational man and
woman who wants 'aw enforcement
and the right kind \>f men in officc
will enroll before July 25 ard vote on
August 29. If you have, has your
neighbor? See to it that :sho has. '
Enroll and vote; it is a sacred duty.

The state chairman is not letting
grass grow anywhere in ?ii?r territory.
She is carrying on a whirlwind campaign
all by herself in the upper part
of the state. She has succeeded in
organizing or laying plans to organ-,
ize in every town she has gone to.
And, indeed, it is easier to organize
than to wtihstand her wonderful arguments
for your doing so. Our advice
to the towns in her itinerary is
either to organize at once or tell her
that you will, for you'll have to anyway,
eventually.
Last week she organized at Pick-'
ens and Mrs. Frank McFall was

ifiV] ter, Gaffney, Spartanburg and to
& ' Greenville the week of July 9, and
F/' we are expecting reports from these
V towns shortly.
V The worafn everywhere Arc calling
for help and are being aroused to the
V significance of the franchise. Mrs.
I Reamer and Dr. Guignard of Columbia
have been to Charelstoa, where
there is also much interest.
Mrs. J. B. Salley is also working in
I the lower part of the state with mar- J
m ked success and everything points to
the future of the league as very;
bright. If there is a county, town or
country community that wishes to or-1
sranize, get your wish to Mrs "Richard |

The State. j e
It will be a matter of interest to t;
all to know that the next state con- ti
vention of the Woman's Christian 3
Temperance union will convene * in
Newberry and the date of the meet- 'R
ing will include Sunday, October 22. j
That the convention body goes to
Newberry will be pleasant news, for
that is one of the most delightful ^
towns of our state, and already the r<
members of the local union are lay- F
ing plans for the convention, which ^
promises to De one 01 tne oest yei "
held. The convention program will
hold many attractions, one of these d
being a national speaker, Mrs. Maud U
B. Perkins of New York, who is na- 3:
tional secretary of the young peo- ^
pie's branch. She is a very magnetic t!
speaker, as all who heard her at the F
last convention in Manning will tets-'F
tify. ;b
There are going to be discussions
and plans for the great work in which t!
the state Woman's unrist:a:i icmper- p
ance union is engaged, so it is ear- o
nestly desired that every j-.nion send E
its representatives. There is a cer- r
tain amount of enthusiasm that o.ie: q

imbibes only by attend ;n?:. Last year g
at the convention we s?id f."> r dele- j d
prate, "You never miss the meetings,;
