That is the pro- ( per way to observe the day. ,: The Newberry college has planned " a first grade summer school and it will be a great convenience to teach-: ers living in Newberry. You get the samp credit at this school that vou will get at any of the summer schools of the state. The school opens next ' Monday. The state campaign has been de-; void of special interest and of all excitement up to this time. The main thing for you to remember now is that you can buy for one entire year so good a newspaper as The Herald and News for only one < dollar. Better come along with your 1 dollar right now before you forget it. I This rate applies equally to all sub- ( scribers whether old or new or what- ( ever may be the date to which yotir subscription has been paid. It will not last long. Better get busy and send the dollar right along. ] WE ARE AGAINST IT ! People of the South, for a long . time, had more than enough of the business of amending the federal constitution. i Then came the proposal to get pro- < hibition and woman suffirage by fed- 1 eral amendment and along with the rest of hte country the South fell for 1 it, as we say in the street, and in so saying make ourselves clear here and now. | The funny thing about these two ( amendments is that most of those who favored the first one opposed j the other! ! That is those who wanted prohibition thought it fine for it to come by amendment to the federal constitu-'. tion .but were dead against getting ] woman suffrage that way. But this is like starting an argu- ' ment over what ^somebody said to somebody else at a public picnic "when all concerned were boys and girls. What's the use? ( What we are driving at now is that the twentieth amendment has been proposed and we are against it. Its advocates want to stop candidates from spending so much money . in elections or rather in campaigns ; prior to elections and for the purpose of being elected. i1 It is all wrong to spend this money ; ?that is admitted without argument but what's the use to put a patch on the federal constitution to check it? What's the matter with the states? It's just a scheme to provide a whole lot of easy jobs for the folks \vho hunger after federal jobs and! congress is always alert to consider a proposal that will provide a few, jobs of this kind. There are so many constituents wanting such jobs. The rest of the country is just pes tered to death now with petty federal job holders. We are investigated, inspected, counted, classified, tabulat- j ed, regulated, and so on by federal I representatives until life is just one 1 j bore after another. It's time to call a halt. rn'- - - - 1- - :UT? cnrl I i nis is such a dcumuic <*i uvic ?uu i i i so clearly and forcibly said, and so: truthful and states so excellently what we have been trying to say from time to time, that we copy it i here and give ,it our most hearty; endorsement, and to say that we too are against it. There is entirely too much regulating from Washington.' There is entirely too much wet nursing. We have said it so often that we are glad that so good a paper as :he Index-Journal has said it too, that we want our readers to read this, and then we would be glad to see and to know that they are beginning- to think. And the whole tendency of this regulating business is to get everything regulated from Washington, and when that time comes, and it is hastening, then we are going to see the end of the republic and of free institutions. But what's the use. the Index-Journal has said just what we would saw ' !, The young ladies at The Herald; and News office seem to be taking to i work in fine spirit. There is one thing we can say for them, they have the business office in better shape 1 than we have seen it in a long- time, and appearances go some little distance in getting business. We bespeak for them the kind consideration of the friends of the paper. If you should have business at the office we feel that we can assure you a pleasant welcome and courteous treatment. \* i 1\T 3 ? i. 10 ? Wm. Folk, Dr. E. N. Kibler and Mr. W. R. Watson. Mr. Child declines nad Mr. Blease has not stated whether he will enter the race or not.
