Sa LIST OF NEW SCHOOL BOOKS ADOPTED BY STATE BOARD New Adoption Will Run From July, 1922. to July, 1927?List of Books Adopted and Ali Dropped The News and Courier. The recent adoption of text books -by the state board of education contains 195 titles for the next five-year period as compared to 148 titles used during the present period, according to a statement given out by John E. Swearingen, state superintendent of education. The statement follows: "The list of tezt books adopted by the state board of education for the five-year period, July 1, 1922, to July 1, 1927, includes 195 titles. This list supercede?3 the adoption of 1917, which contained 148 titles. Eightythree of the former titles were resdopted, thirty-one were dropped by the state board and thirty-four were not offered by tfie publishers. The new list contains forty-seven additional titles in order to meet the requirements of a broadened, enriched and liberalized cqurse of study. No pupil should be expected or required tto purchase ail* tkese books. Dis-criminating teachers are advised to require not- more than five books at a time during any one year. The op portuniiy for reading however, has been greatly improved by offering a number of supplementary texts, and (it is hoped that. pupil* will be encouraged to re^d as much as possible. "All old books may continue in class room use for the next eighteen months, up to January 1, 1924. Pupils, therefore will have a year and a half in which to finish the texts now in their possession. The introduction of new books should be a gradual process. "In some instances, books were offered the . board at an increase of more than 300 per cent in price: For the new adoption as a whole,^the,in CT03S0 IS SUUUL. *?U CCIi I/J atiuvu^u scattered titles had to be retained "at double their former cost."
