Holmes will conduct service at St. Lukes Episcopal churchj here Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock.! Mrs. Grady Holt, who has been on J an extended visit to her parents, Mr.! and Mrs. T. G. Williams, left on j Thursday for Chicago, III., where she j will make her home, Mr. Holt being j in business in that city. Little Miss j Elizabeth will remain in Newberry j with her grandparents until scnooi j closes in June. Mrs. E. A. Carpenter has returned j from a visit to North Carolina and "cvill be in the millinery department of the store of Halthvanger and Car-; penter Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. James Epting are receiving: the congratulations of their J friends on the arrival last Saturday, i February 11th. of a tine boy. Mr. Walter Denning returned this j week irom a very pieasani, uiu iu GoHsboro, Benson and other points in North Carolina. We were pleased to have a call f'-om Mr. Sam D. Pelham of Greenville. It has been a good many years s'nce we have seen Sam though he is the same as of old. Ii recalled the c!d college days to talk with him and } ave him ask about John Hobbs and rrooks Wingard and some of the boys of those days. He is now living in Greenville and has been called to Newberry on account of the serious illness of his brother. Dr. William E. Pelham. Dr. Pelham was slightly bet-1 t-~r on Thursday though still a very ill nan. Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Aull and .Mr. James Lipscomb of Greenwood came ever on Monday to hear Clarence Poe. 1 Hon. Eugene S. Blease has been invited to address the meeting of the , teachers and trustees at the court- < house on Saturdav at eleven o'clock and has consented to do so in the ; event he can get away from his duties in Columbia. Every one is invited to i attend the meeting1 and all will be 1 welcome. Mrs. Gordon Blackmon and fine ? little son, Gordon, Jr.. left on Wednesday for Atlanta to stay with Mr. t Blackmon while he is taking a course at the celebrated Georgia Technologi- ; cal institute. We hope Gordon's health will permit of his completing I the studies. In the meantime the : many friends of Mrs. Blackmcn, .the ' gifted daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. Dan Wicker, will miss the sweet music of her playing and singing; but we look forward to her return when j we shall again, we hope, hear her j rich, clear voice in the songs she sings so we'll. Miss Xell Kohn of Columbia sent i her brother, the well known Hal, a beautiful miniature parrot, which the ; said Hal has Jn a suitable swing at ' his store, to keep company with his i canary: only the parrot can't use its ' voice?because ^t is a peanut parrot. Ac 87-year-old woman somewhere in Ohio the other day outspelled 2"> young college and high school graduates in a spelling bee. On account cf changed conditions that was natural. Instead of spelling, if the talk had been of ball games the old lady would have been downed on the first round. Young couples these days talk of ball games on their way from church?they don't hear the sermons. Time was when a girl went to school she went there to study. Xow it is boys and bail trames.
