Father Jacquier is a former French soldier, serving under the tricolor in the great world conflict in which Marshal Foch won the glory of being the commander in chief of the victorious allied armies. Mr. Erderle, who t is supervisor of attendance of the Dei i troit school system, was elected head - !of the national league at its recent; 5 convention here. 1 The Dlan will be submitted to other i . X ? officials of the league for approval.! I The basis for the plan is to make each 1 attendance officer of a public school > system conform to -a minimum standard of education and character. The * same requirements would be demand ed of these officers as are required l ;for teachers. To make the plan effeci i tive it is proposed that the ieague j i name a committee composed of some I i of the country's leading educators,: L' members of which would set the stan' dards and require that all attendance department workers conform to them. '.The committee would have no standi ' ing under the laws of the various , states, it is pointed out, but virtually i ! could compel obedience to its man-' 1 dates in much the same way that the! > American Academy of Medicine re-1 . quires medical colleges to conform to, 1. certain standards through the weight ; of public opinion. ^; Given such attendance officers as ' could meet risjid requirements, school '' ! j officials could be in a better position 1 to serve their committees by using the , officers as a ''half way mark" between | ' the public schools and the schools, Mr.. "The schools must : make greater efforts to fit the pupils for life in the communities, rather! than to strive to make their courses so idealistic that the communities can not reach the mark. It is far better 1 to train students to meet ordinary work-a-day problems and to solve' I them than it is to till their heads with - a mass of things they will never use.' I The schools must stop turning out a ' product without a thought as to the - need for that product.
