two tuberculosis: what should | we do about it and with it i By B. E. Kneece, M. D., Health ()fc! ficer, Newberry County Healih Department. Few diseases there are which to the average person cause greater anxiety fear or despair than tuberculosis, and to be told that one is a victim of tu S berculosis usually means that this in- j dividual at once becomes extremely sensitive of his condition, and ^on-; siders himself doomed to a shortened, uncertain and torturing existence, ostracized by society, a burden to his family and a menace to his friends, with but the one and inevitable outcome, death, to look forward to. Such thoughts however should never exist, for tuberculosis encountered in its earlier stages can in a large majority of cases be arrested, and even many of the far advanced cases, particularly if one lung^alone be involved, can be sufficiently arrested, as to allow the individual to live a useful and happy life, limited only to ^ common sense, healthful routine, and restricted from doing heavy labor. \ There has been no new discovery to prompt these statements, nor are we offering anything original, great or startling. It is simply the sani' torium treatment, fresh air, good food, sunlight, graduated exercise when indicated, and artificial pneumothorax intelligently applied by a phy- ' sician trained in 'tuberculosis work, supported always by the heartiest cooperation of the patient himself. The importance of diagnosing tu fcerculosis very early in its course canv not be over estimated, for an early knowledge of the condition not only < materially increases the patient's' ; chances for a permanent arrest of the ! disease, but if he be properly in strocted, he will live without spread- ? ing the disease to those with whom he may come 'in contact, and need not j be< abhorred by society. 1: It is now generally believed by the 1 tuberculosis specialists that aoprox:I mately 95 percent of all persons are ; at some age in life infected with the 1 tubercle bacilltfs, and by far the most j nc?o in for-finn?; take o)ace before , U A liixvv adult life is reached. Not all of this la^ge percentage develop active tufc^fculosis, it \>eing necessary for! some additional weakening influence tch bring out the ^activity, however should this added influence bring about activity during childhood, the; tuberculosis would run a more rapid J and more fatal course. -There are many diseases and con-1 e&ions that may be classed as assis- ! taftits the germ of tuberculosis in it3 deadly work, but the more importyit of these are colds, influenza*'I nliasles, scarlet fever and whooping I cough, and such-conditions that favor tlje development and spread of these j diseases, as* insufficient 'and improper ' cfething and foods, poor hygienic sur- j rftjandings, poor ventilations and lack ct proper qaarantine. j# .'When one notices a lack of the, tissual "pep" and vigor, feels more or legs tired rather often, develops a 1 slight cough or \ regular clearing of tfcfroat in the morning, colds that' pj&r sist, appetite below par,?and per- 's ^~" flflonloccnoci: wifh or without ' a ??.?.. ? a;Joss of weight, it is sufficient cause ^ t& be alarmed, and a visit to the doc- j tor for thorough examination is in o^jder. Children who fail to romp^ a3)d play as they normally should, and j wio are in any way below par, had b^st be given special chest- examina-: tjj&n, on a clinic day set apart as a part of the work connected with the; medical inspection of school children J as now required by state law. It would be well if each county j could provide a sanatorium for tuberculosis cases, a Visiting nurse for' those curing at home, and an open air school for pre-tuberculosis children, j but until such is established, certain- j ly a number of counties could form a league, be given state and county ap- j propriations, and thus provide for the; operation of an institution for such j individuals who could not afford the' I higher rate of a private sanltorium, located perhaps in some distant state, j What would your county do if asked: to take a part in such a league. Summary: If you feel that you have a fair number of the earlv symptoms of tu ? berculosis lose no time but consult a! ? physician at once. If told you have the disease by any of its pet names, "spot on your. lungs," "old dog," "consumption," or . any. other, buck up, smile and put up. a game fight. You can win if you; try and try hard enough. If you have no county health cle- j nartment. no visitinsr nurse and no^ TB organizations, urge your legisla-j tors to make efforts to get them. If you have any of these organiza- j tions or any others that strive to im-j prove your county, lend them your support. Our prediction is that first class { postage will not be increased to three ! cent3. There are some things that the public just will not stand for. wmmmtmrmmmammmmm wcwwmm ?ww?omi j?ai n ^vi* ? wrow MASTER'S SALE.
