Newberry post of the American Legion
defeated Clinton post in a battle
on the Clinton diamon Thursday afternoon,
July 28th. The Newberry
Tigers advanced upon their old enemies,
the Clinton Blue' Devils, in their
historic stronghold de Clinton, and
the hottest battle of the season took
place. The Newberry Tigers put over
a heavy artillery barrage, and for
a while it looked as if the whole Clinton
force would be annihilatd. When
the smoke and dust of the initial attack
had cleared aw-y five tigers had
gone "over the top." However, the
Blue Devils came back with a coun
tr attack, and at the close ot tne nmtn
assault the casualties stood six to six.
In the opening of the 10th Captain
Scurry came up with "Big Bertha"
and shelled the enemies left flank,
whcih fled in disorder, and two more
tigers penetrated the enemy's stronghold
and turned the tide of battle.
The enemy made a strong counter attack.
But Bodie drove them back to
their dug outs with the hand grenade.
The Clinton casualties were heavy.
The whole fighting force and civilian
o-*vni?-wtrooc; wota r?nmnletelv overcome.
