KEEPING YOl N(i AT THE 1 01 NT A IN OK YOITH. ? 9 Nellie C. Ellerhe. Reprinted from the Publicity col umns OI VtUWIlIIcl rniviiuniu of Women's clubs. There are times in the life of every woman, who has passed the borderline of girlhood, when she murmurs. audibly or mauaimy: "Backward, turn backward. 0 Time in thy flight. Make me a girl again just for tonight". Suppose, as in the fairy tale, she should find that she had "wished true" and that, instead of for just one night, she could, foi two glorious weeks regain the happy, carefree. enthusiastic outlook on life, which makes "sweet sixteen" the golden age. Would she accept the answer to her wish, or would she keep on tanning and darning. and decide that after all "it's foolish to try to he young again?" That seems a useless question? and yet a great many mi the club women of South Carolina reject the opportunity to renew their youth, as they might do every summer by at tending the Club Women's course at Winthrop college. This is an oft-told story, hut one that is always true, and one that should be interesting to every member of the South Carolina Federation of Women's clubs. From the moment the club woman reaches Winthrop she begins to feel the thrill of life alone: her veins. She becomes one with the great throng of young women who are here working. studying, enjoying. She is again, jn spirit, a college girl, with all the college girl's ambitions and enthusiasms. Special courses are prepared for her?courses which cover every of lift* fnr which she needs training. There are lecturers with whose names and writings she has long been familiar, but whom she has never hoped to even see. Here she meets them and knows them, and ever after is able to read into their books or articles something of their personality. Every year Mrs. Fox. supreme authority for women in all matters of parliamentary procedure, makes the pilgrimage from Detroit to Koc-k Hill, and prepares future citizcns to defend themselves from "ways that are dark" and tricks that are vain, to her pupils, in the political conventions of the future. Citizenship is taught, too?broad, patriotic acceptance, and understandin?: of the duties and responsibilities which will come to us whether we want them or not. This course is in the able hands of Dr. J. E. Walmsley of Winthrop. and Miss Marie B. Ames, field director of the National League of Women Voters, and writ er of those interesting articles on citizenship which you have been reading in The Woman's Home Companion and in Good Housekeeping. Home and motherhood have always first place in importance with women. and the problems which they bring are always provided for by Dr. Johnson with lectures from experts in these departments. If you make a point of order, and ask how these courses can be popular with women who arp trying to imagine themselves girls again, just mail the poem of Dr. Holmes in which "Then man would be a boy again and be a father too". But to realize fully that we "wish1 ed true" and that Time has turned backward for us, you must so to the Peabody Gymnasium and watch the folk dancing. One charming club woman appeared in a particularly fetching gown lately and. with a face wreathed in smiles announced, "I've lost five pounds in exactly the right place to make this gown a success". No wonder, for she had heen learning all the graceful evolutions of these dances, and had been swimming in that crystal pool, which furnishes the fnlminatinfr touch to the ni'OCeSS Of rejuvenation. Will it seem too unkind in the.-?e servantless days to tell our absent sisters what we bad for dinner Sunday? Prepare to be envious: Creamed chicken?the chickens and eggs straight from Winthrop's own poultry farm. Vegetables from the big garden. A salad which seemed to have been brought straight from tiie page of The Ladies' Home Journal, and placed on the table. ?t salad composed of the most luscious fruits and the crispest whitest lettuce. It reminded one of the lines. ""Twould tempt the dying anchorite A'lt IU vac, Hack to this world ho'd turn his soul - K Ul H I II l WBWgBWPWBWIWillJ'L ' HWI?IIM1I UIWPW^WW | And plunge his lingers in the salad bowl". i And the crowning foaUtre of the least was ice cream.
