Tuesday, June 21, 1921. : i DOLLAR DAY A business man wruinir to the Press j and banner :n a recent issue or mat! excellent newspaper wants the nu-v-j chants and the board of trade or; chamber of commerce of that town of Abbeville to get together and cooper- j ate in the putting on of a dollar dayj .sale. This businessman seems to be j of the opinion that much of the trade of the town is being attracted to cth-j er towns from the fact that the merchants are not advertising* as they! should, and that all these things are; working to the hurt of Abbeville, and! he feels that a little good and judi-j eious advertising would help the mer-; chants and the town of Abbeville al-1 so. And that a good way to begin i would be for all the merchants of the town to get together and Have a del- j lar day sale, and that by cooperating j in the matter there could be a gootij lot of advertising had and not cost any one man too ?reat an amount. By all the merchants and the business) men getting together we could have!several sut-h days, and one a weekj for several weeks, and it would be: worth a whole lot to this town as well! as Abbeville. That also is a su^es-j tion of this business man who is writ-; ing to the paper. |. We quote one paragraph of his ar-, tide. "Good times are not coming agiin, { they must be brought and it will take! cooperation and pep and hard' work J tu bring them. To this end, I wish! to suggest that the Chamber cf Ccm-i merce and merchants set forth a spet--{ ial day at regular intervals to be!; L-r>oii-n J ^ rirJlov Sirtfl 'fnv PVP't'l" ' I merchant in town to put on a special} sale-of some article that will be b:g! enough bargain to bring in the pe pie, then for a big newspaper adycr-1 tisir.g campaign along with any other i, form of advertising such as distribute j. ing circulars, automobile signs *!fnu i boosting by all." Some weeks ago Mr. E. A. Carper-! ter of the firm of Haltiwanger an I Carpenter of Newberry put on ju-tj such a sale by himself. Mr. Carpen- ; ter is a very enterprising merchant < and knows the game and gives his un-J: divided attention to his growing bu.- -: iness, and he was so well pleased j; with the results to his own business M from that sale that he is arranging to J i put cn another in a short time. It i 1 * was a dccirted success, anci n one mer- j chant can 'make it a success why i should it not be a much greater su*> < cess when all the merchants en^a^ed.! in the sale and cooperated in the effort to make y. succeed. Now the chamber of ommer- i; 1 could very well help in the adverti - J ' in? of the town if it were a town si'- i fair, and ail the 01 *rc ene:a'i:<;: ; in it and puitini* on s-u-h i sal ', our | j when ii is under-aken b\ only one i; merchant the chamber of commerce [' could not very well do much advt-v- ; tisir.g and publicity work fov it, be- i Co^i^e that would bo advertising one i man's business, but when rlu- mer 1 chants of the town, or so nearly ;.il ? that you could not tell the difference.! went in then there could be a whole j lot of advertising done in a geneval i way that would advertise tie town! and at the same time advertise the merchants without the advert:sir.g "re-1 ing for any one individual. It is a fine plan to do wholesome i advertising for the town, an ! at the 11 same time give our :n:-:vh?rts a goc d [ trade and bring people here who -n* yj be would otherwise not come. The|< truth is the merchants of Xewherry 1 need to wake up just a Utile in 'Ir1 matter of advertising. We need r:i |' awskenir.fr in the matter pr,I' of the rijrht sort. We never did wartji a man to advertise in The Herald nvdj News as a matter of helping the p*'--j per. but because it paid him t;> j it)' ; , his moncv in the advert is: nu-. Of! course every ere understands that t:iej; newspaper could not exist in a?;> 1 community if there was not a err: ;<I' sale in that community f- the spaci j the paper has to sell, and at a livi -11 price, but the man who does ihe y1' vert is: ng should get value receiv. d for the money he puts in it. T-te trouble with the country publisher has been all the while that hn mini lies the article he has to sell as to its commercial value. None of us should sret the I *2 ill W cl i V iUUl.^K HO.tO.V. CV any job. We may drop out but there will be some one to take the place. Cooperation is our slojran. It is the word that spells success in any undertaking where there is more than fk1 to do the job. and- there is no one man place in the world. We are ail dependent upon one another. We love to do our end of the newspaper job. It i? easy ar.d we sometimes feel that we know hew. Bat to do it successfully and well we must have the cooperation of the em pi >yecs in the office in all departments, ar.d the cooperation of the subscribers ar.d readers of the paper. And in these times this is peculiarly necessary. Yes, theie is a law or an ordinance on the statute books of the town to require that all dojrs should be kepi up or should be muzzled. These who arc .eld enough will ?*ecall when we passed that ordinance and how well it was enforced. That was at the beginning when it was fre-:h in the minds of our people how a with rabies had bitten a child i how the child died and then the pn'Mie Loiifcjence \v?.s aroused anw we 'vmanded that dogs be muzzled or kepi, up. But alas how soon we forget. Purely we will not wait i;> ei-fo :e he <ic^ ordinance until another cirld is kitten and dies of that ho?vi'!e disease to do something: alcntr th's line. But that has nothing to do w'lh the regulation of the driving of mot n* :ars. We should be oh', enough a:;d bitr enough to enforce both laws. We have missed the mails a few times again. A Life Saving Siaticn J The lower end of the el l public square, rurrounding the >p<>t where t!:e first settlers in Newberry campe? at a spring, is very ofyen congest e< by the assembled wagons, busies , mules and hordes, reminding on<? <>1 some traveling caravan stopping tc rest. although there is no snauow 01 a lock in a weary la ml there, or any|thing of that kind. Ii is hot dowr there, and hotter when crowded, especially on a Saturday. Seme days all day long, mules and horses art allowed to stand nitehed, in the broiling, scorching, parching sun, and hungry and thirsty at that. This should not be allowed. If the owners of these ill treated dumb animals are not U"?>ing to have more consideration during the hot months of July ami Auirust -they cu.irht to be made sublet to law. Mr. C. F. Templet on, whose side entrance to his Pepsi-Cola plant overlooks the square, is in u position to know what is goir.? on in i ho siiiinrc. has reported incidents coming: under his observance, and fiom what he tells us his plant has bccome a very life saving: station. -A ;nong the nearly everyday occur; rences* he relates are several well worth mentioning. One day a mule with the lines around its neck was choking, and would have choked to ! death had not ?.!r. Templeton and his hards gone over and cut the animal loose. Another instance was that of a horse which had become entangled and had fallen in the harness; when these men grave their assistance. Another day a muie j^ot his hind leprs in tl>?> lviviv>? nnH ft-!!. Then ji horse ?0t wedtred betwe^i a bujrtry anil Wii^on. The helping squad from this few "life-saving station" went out a.:;:: in to do their humane work. In the latter ease they hud to lift bu.vry.ies and wajrons to make room to extricate t'.e horse from hi> perilous position. St ill another day a mule trot ?* tvx~/\t> { 'inn'lTc, !in(l IIJ^ "vvi a wa^vw vi\. *%*.*. . .. toned ;>j thai he couldn't move. This njuie was heinjr kicked viciously 1 ?y mother mule. Mr. Templeton and his ever ready hands went to the relief of the poor animal. It wou'. l se"m that no man would be so heartless as to leave his dumb brute to suffer so.
