CITY SCHOOL WAS1 Board of Truster* Made !l> \ it mini Report, Which Was K.\ eel lout Shotting?I"ruent Need tor More Room in 4i?a v<.iini.u?School Lionds Ha\e mr i^\ uvx'i.' - >?t Been Sold. The annual school meeting of the citizens of Newberry school district was "held, qfter due notice by adver- j tisernents in the city papers, in the j courthouse Friday afternoon at live i o'clock. There was the usual small i attendance of citizens?loss than two dozen men. and no women at all. I W. H. Wallace was calb,| ? > ihe chair, and P. I). Johnson acted as sec retary. The annual report of the trustees was read by Superintendent Olin I!. Cannon. It showed the schools to he in good shape, except that th??re is not room enough at the high school and the negro school is too crowded so j crowded that additional room has tot be rented. Bonds were voted by the school dis- j trict some time ago, but the interest ! was fixed at five per cent on the bonds, i and, though there have been several inquiries, no reasonable offer has been made for the bonds. The colored people or .Viwuerry have accumulated a fund of more than v a thousand dollars towards a new schoolhouse, and there is a ftro^pe-'rt rt" having: fifteen hundred added to that by the state; but that is not enough, j The trustees contemplate selling the j property on Caldwell street, in Crav-i elton and building a large school- j house of wood in another part of town! as soon as sufficient funds can be obtained. As to the high school, no definite plans have been decided upon: but the trustees are considering ihe?plan 01 building a four-room wooden building close to the high school, so constructed thaj the partitions can be t-ikin out later and the building be used as a gymnasium, as soon as a brick addition can be added to the high school. But no definite plan has been decided upon, though it is very important that something be done before the school nnpninp next fall. VI'-~o Following is the annual report of the board of trustees of the year's work: 'Trustees' Annual Report. To the Citizens of the Newberry School District: The Newberry city schools besran the session 1920-1921 on September 13th with the largest enrollment in the history of the schools, and on May ?..oo ?nn nf thp T?W1Kf SI1 OI51 WOO riiV4 W4 Vii v v *- V4*V ? eessful sessions. Many classes were too full, especidly was this true in the negro schools, where each class was larger ti?:m the school laws allow. We were not able to remedy this crowded condition, 4 owing to the fact that we were unable to sell the bonds voted last year for school improvements. Uecause of the fact that these bonds were limited to a rate of five per cent, we succeeded m getting only one bid. and it was for about 77; which, in our option, was too low to net the scho 's the sum of money necessary to carry out the * building program outlined by your committee appointed last year to recommend such building improvements as are needed in the schools. In the high school we have suffered for lack of room. One class has been reciting in the auditorium, while at the same time another class or section is observing study period in the same \place. The class in agriculture could not be provided with a room in the high school, and therefore lias had to meet in a room fitted up in the basement of Boundary Street school. We are still striving to get a decent bid on the bonds and are at the same time trying to borrow, in anticipation of the sale of the bonds, a sum of money sufficient to enable us to begin building. W<> are clad to report to you that our schools were not closed this session on account of epidemics. The superintendent's monthly-reports indicate that there were, at times, numerous absences due to influenza. * ooping cough, chicken pox and measles. It is very gratifying to report to you that the stirte high school inspecf tor made a visit to our high school. - aDd was well pleased with the course of study offered and also with tlic quality of teaching done by our te-u ners; We are proud of the fact that our liigh school is classified as class A. We wish to commend our teachers for the faithful service tney rendered during the session, and to express our appreciation of the loyalty they manifested towards our schools in accepting their places in our schools for next session, in the face of more remunerative offers from other schools.: ' We have had to elect only four new teachers for next session out of a total of thirty-five white teachers?a j * record which we believe could not he! duplicated in the state.
