. VAUGHN REFUSES j; TO EE IDENTIFIED' - J CONTINUES TO POSE AS T. E.jo EARL IN. FLORIDA ^ I a Cooper ?5$ujs Requisition Paper andjt Officers Leave "Coi-.:ir:*3ia for ^ Taraoa. ! v Tampa, April 7.?T. U. Vaughn, held here for South Carolina ciftcers, ^ is perfectly /ational again today and 01 for the first tlm~ discussed his identity, denying emphatically in;, he is any other than T. E. >vui; that he has eve/ ha^ anothe. me thut he has a former wife in Greenville. I Ke was especially emphatic in denying the wife's story, crying out that he has only one wife and that he i loves her dearly. He gave the sheriff. | an order to the county superintend- | ent of schools to pay Mrs. Ea^i $13 2 | still due him for three weeks' serv- I ice in the Port Tampa schools. Not | knowing thai his wife's name had i been learned, he refused a request | for it. saviner it would hurt her in her P home town -and that she was innocent | of any wrong.. This statement wiped I out the last vestige of doubt in the I minds of authorities that they have I the right vman. "If he is not | Vaughn," said Detective Blossom, "he would have no objection to giving her | name." When told that his wife had | admitted he was Vaughn he said: 1 "You are just trying to kid me and | scheming to get me-in a trap." Con- I tinuing his denial, he spoke of "a man | named Vaughn" and admitted a < knowledge of the crmies for which Vaughn was convicted. , Wife Tells of Marriage Further investigation of the jnarriage of Earl and his wife and her < anxiety to make an affidavit clearing \ up the maiden name disclosed that < the wife's full maiden name was 1 "Sandal Edmonds Beamguard." She 1 / told a notary in the county judge's <. office that since the trouble has come.^ up, she desires to establish beyond question her legal marriage. She wanted an affidavit made that she was the "Eddie Beamguard" of the marriage license dated April 17, 1920. Explaining the discrepancy, she offered to swear that she appeared before the county judge's clerk last April 17, and when asked her name, told them "Sandal Edmonds Beamguard; that, apparently the clerk- misunderstood and made out the application license and affidavit in the name of Eddie Beamguard; that when handed the afx davit to sign, applicants for marriage license in this state must make fTinf +.V?PvMnrp nf atrp fttr she called attention to the fact that ! her name was Edmonds, not Eddtey but that the girl clerk said it wouldn't: matter and go ahead and sign it ''Eddie>' for all the papers were made out that way already. Mrs. Earl reported to the detective j bureau as required again this morn-! ing, but did not discuss the case.; merely asking if she was needed. Af- : ter the pervious day's experience of i! being refused to get within arnvsI length, she clid not ask for a permit | ? to visit her husband at the jail and I probably intends to let her "good-bye.' dear, I'll see you in heaven" stand as"j 'the final farewell, unless the South Carolina authorities want her to go ! back with them. They are expected , tomorrow. Money on Deposit ! i She has an account ot 5>Y4o in one;; , bank and $1,000 certificate of deposit i in a Plant City bank, and her friends j? operate in every way possible to; i make her comfortable and happy if |; she remains. She has made many J \ close personal friends among her j j neighbors at Port Tampa, and several ]; from Plant City have testified as to! her exemplary conduct there and of- J j fered her any assistance she needs, j j A letter to a local paper from Lake j ^ Wales, Fla., signed C. T. Berfoot, j 1 said: "I note with great pleasure the at-- j j count of the capture of one of the j! most debased criminals, that I ever knew personally. I sincerely hope j there is no error in identity." Berfoot goes on to say that he opposed the appointment of Vaughn to the post of superintendent of the or phanage. He also says that Vaughn had a wife and several children while superintendent, ar.d that he has never heard of her defcth or a divorce. Though he does not mention it, $erfoot may have been the man who saw Vaughn at Haines Gity a year ago, as reported at that time. Lake Wales " is only 15 miles from Haines City, ' and Haines City is only 30 from j Plant City, where Earl was stationed a year ago. So both might have been visiting in Haines City the same day. Requisition papers for the return to South Carolina of Thurston U. Vaughn, who is under arrest at Tampa, Fla., were issued early yesterday by Governor Cooper and Sheriff T. Alex.
