VVA <S> <S> ?> AT THE OPERA HOUSE < > < <$ <?> A CLOSE CALL The star experienced the closest call of his dare-devil career uuring i the filming of some of the under-wa- j ter scenes in "Fighting Fate." After ; a rapid succession of sensational happenings, he is hurled into water tank which occupies the hold of a boat. The tank had a slide outlet operated by intricate hand machinery from above. According to the scenario, the outlet was to De opencu Dy ine iauiu- i ing villains from above, then shut with I a snap in Duncan's face as he reach- j ed it. ! The outlet valve operated smoothly until Duncan took his dive for the opening, which led out to the sea. Then it stuck for a second. The result was that Duncan's body went x half way through the outlet before the slide came down, wedging his body in tight and fast. Eis peril was immediately evident to the watchers above. As the only ! way of emptying the tank was blocked by the accident, men dove both inside and outside the boat, trying with their hands to rip open the j slides while others worked desperately at the controlling wheel. n'?w/vniri Kv this time have i XJ uav.au ... ' been beyond help, if he had not made use cf the secret of breath suspension, taught him by an Indian yogi. He even helped as much as he could the frantic rescuers on both sides. All i j three were near the point of utter exhaustion, with tragedy apparently inevitable, when the valve jerked into action as mysteriously as it had balked. Duncan was swept out with the rush of water, and hauled on board i ' I in a state of collapse. "Fighting Fate" begins Saturdiy at I i- : j tfte opera nousc. w. HARRY T. MOREY 1 IN THRILLING FILM * 1 Roderick Beverly did net expect a genial welcome in Laurel Ridge, fori he knew well that the Tennessee mountaineers and especially the! moonshiners are prone to look uponj strangers with disapproval and dis-1 trust. He did not, however, expect the j strange and perilous adventures which befell him in the course of his efforts to learn why the Larrabee Syndicate; was so anxious to buy his father's , , i tract of undeveloped timber lana. < The story of Roderick's trials and triumphs is told in "The Gauntlet,". j visualized by Vitagraph, with Harry, T Morey in the leading role, which will be shown at the opera house on: Thursday. ( < j Knowing himself to be marked for assassination, Roderick finds comfort for awhile in the seeming friendship j of Dan Barrow. Then the dishearten? ink knowledge comes to him that Bar-1 * row, actually an agent of the Larrabee Syndicate, is his most dangerous and conscienceless enemy. One true friendship helps greatlyj in sustaining Roderick's courage in j seemingly hopeless situations. Nessy." Worthing, returning to her wild J mountain home after six years in ^ s vool in the North, proves a friend indeed and reven offers to make the supreme sacrifice of marrying a man she fears and dislikes/in order to save Roderick from a niob bent ufton J lynching him. Hatreds and jealousies arising be 'tween his enemies *paid Roderick in ! running the gauntlet they had pre-i pared for him. CITATION OF LETTERS OF AD- j MINISTRATION. j The State of South.
