Believes Forecast Made is in Error by Over One Million Bales. Washington* Dcc. 10,?The estitmate of this year's crop of cotton at ! 12.987.000 bales was challenge^ in t the senate today by Senator Heflin, i Democrat, Alabama, who said this [ was an overestimate of 1,500,000 j bales. 'These figures do such violence to the faets," Senator Heflin said, "and are so at variance with the truth as to the amount of cotton produced this year, that I felt itvmy duty to challenge their correctness, and to {give to the senate and* the country some facts and figures to sustain my contention. "I contend that the board of crop estimate- has overestimated the pres eut, cotton crop by at least 1,250,000," he dontinucd. "We have *?nned to December 1, of this year 10.144,000 bales. "In the other two crap years in which the amount ginned to December it was around 10,000,000 bales, the amount remaining to be ginned in both of those; ycap after Decem! ber 1, was less than 1,500,000 bales. 1 "If we should add to the amount of 10,144,000 bales ginned to Der ;cembcr 1, of this year 1,500,000 bales, the amount we will say^ which remamcd to be ginned, after Decern ber 1 we will have a crop of 11,644,-. 000 bales. . This amount falls short of the crop board's estimate of this year's crop by 1,343,000 bales. "The average amount of cotton ginned for the last five years after December 1, was 1,T45,Q00 bales.. If we add that amount to the 10,144,*000-ginned to December 1, of this year we have 11,889,000 bales. The ,warm and dry fall season of i'920 has been more favorable for the early I opening and gathering of cotton tlian any year within the last ten and the present crop was more nearly gathered and ginncxl by December 1, of this year* than has been the c^sc in ?any other crop year to my knowledge. "f am confident that the final gmners report" will show that the board of crop estimates has overestimated the 1920 coiton crop by between 1,' 250,000 and J ,500,000 bales."
