Wc print today an editorial from the Abbeville Press and Banner on "Watch Your Step," and wc ask that you read it, and we desire to suggest to the city authorities of Newberry that they appoint just such an officer for this good town, and we hope that the appointment of such an offiepp will make it necessary for you to "watch your step." When thai automobile blazed up a little th? other afternoon from back fire, ?.?t: the alarm went in, they say that th< street was filled with cars just as II there had been races on, aiid al. wanting to see who could get lu ih-.fire ?rst, surely not for the ioot they may do because every one win knows anything about efforts to cop trol a fire knows that the crowds arc ' always in the way rarher than a help Every alarm of fire is the signal fo oil tVio p?n in triwn fo hit tho stree Wit IUV ? ? v v .. ?. and see who can go the fastest. Marvelous that some one is not ru:: ovt. x at every time the fire beli is sanded The stfre highway department wa. f;. authorized to promulgae certain ruie to regulate traffic on the highways. I * 1 is now suggested that these rejula tions when they are adopted o. agreed upon be submitted 4o the leg islcture at its next session and be is corporated in the statute law of tlu state. The idea is a good o^e. W( certainly eed some sort of reguu: tion or code for the traffic on the pub lie highways. There are so man} . 1- .. i X. drivers 01 cars tnai ao not seem u have any regard for the rights o:> the other fellow, or to know anything about, the amenities of life when i1 cojnes t6 driving cars or have any re gard for life or safAy of any livinjc tiling, not even their own noblt Selves; that it is necessary to have \ some Sort of code and it should b< incorporated in the statute lav of! the state, and then just as impor iaht as this, is to see that the regu laJtrons are observed, and if noi then see to it that the violator i: brought to "account of his failure t( observe the code. <$ <? <$ AMONG THE SCHOOLS < & ~ .. ' < McCulIough. On last k Wednesday morning, ac cording to appointment with Mr. A H. Counts, attendance officer, ; '.V visited the school at McCulIough The school is taught by Mrs. E. M Suber for this session. In fact sh< taught the school the past session It is. not a large school but the chi1 dren seem bright and were ven much interested in my visit and list ened attentively to what I had to sa> . ' to them, and somehow I can not ge' away from the idea that we will ,al be benefited by the visit. The schoc building is neat and comfortable -an< Mrs. Suber seems to be doing gooi work. This school is on the Appa v lachian highway about six miles Iron h'- - Whitmire. * ' From McCullough we drove ove; to Mollohon, and this was my firsi trip right in this section of the coun ty. 1 felt like I was discovering new territory anil taking lessons in geog raphy. The road across to the schoo is passable now, but when. Hie winter rains come and the mud get? well mixed I do not see how ! he peo pie travel very much along iliis way It is not very far from McCullougl to Mollohon dim My across tho Held but around the road it is porbablv three miles. It is located in th? neighborhood of the Bakers and the Abrams and the old ante-belluir houses are evidence that hi the day: before the war this was a prosperour farming section and the land ownerlived in ease and comfort, but in thi? day when travel is by automobiles tc make the section an attractive placc in which to live there is great neet for the opening and the building of some roads. But there were 20 chil dren in the school and they had beeexpecting me for some time, so Mrs . W. A. Andrews, the teacher said. They were interested, and bright and attentive and had the building nea-1 and comfortable, and really more modern than the McCullough. Each one of these schools has a library anc the teachers said that the childrer were interested in the reading of thr ' books, and that is good. A taste for reading is one of the tnings xnaT should be cultivated among the chil dren in the schools, and it should be helpful reading, and that is what they will get out of the books selected foi these rural libraries.
