r CREDITORS LOSE
IN PONS FIASCO
LESS THAN FIFTY CENT 5 0?<

| Boston, Aug. 24.?A payment of
R less than 50 cents on the dollar to
^ the creditors of Charles Ponzi s
' "quick rich" scheme, ii omciai estimates
of his liabilities are correct,
was indicated by his statement of assets
at the receivers' hearing today.
Assuring the federal receivers that
i had disclosed all lie knew iJonzi told
ft of assets which Robert G. Dodge,
H counsel for the receivers, declared
^ were "not worth anywhere near $3.Y
000,000."' The official estimate of
i I11S muuc tuici an
I of his accounts, stands at $7,000,000.
Ponzi said he thought this was in error.
He claimed he was solvent and
had nearly $4,000,000 or assets zo
meet his liabilities, which he set at
$3,000,000.
The hearing was storm* at times.
Daniel H. Coakley, counsel for Ponzi.
surrendered to the receivers, to assist
in meetings creditors' claims, checks

given to him and to Daniel V. McIsaac,
associate counsel, as retaining
fees. He said that when he took
the money he thought Ponzi was a
millionaire, but that now he wanted
everything to go to the creditors. He
called upon the receivers and their
counsel to join with him in working
without fee, but his challenge was
not accepted.

receivers, remarked:
"If you thought this man had $!,000,000
left, do you suppose anybody
thinks you would have got only $25,000?"
. "You are a liar when you suggest
anything like that," exclaimed Mr.
, Coakley, jumping to his feet. The lie
I was passed three times without a retort
by the receiver except "Thank
you."

Ponzi told ot loans 01 ccu:i
to Hencv Chmielinski, president, and
| William S. McNary, treasurer* of the
Hanover" Trust company, which was
Ponzi's principal depository and
which went to the wall with his collapse.
His announcement that he
had loaned $10,000 to Daniel P.
Desmond, treasurer of the Lawrence
Trust company of Lawrence, was followed
by Desmond's resignation iater
in the day. Ponzi said he had made
loans of several hundred dollars to
fe the chief of police of Sharon and to
> John A. Ray lieutenant of police of
o
otmicx vine.
Showing Ponzi's stubs for six
checks of $200,000 each, Mr. Docile
asked him who obtained1 the money
and for what purpose. PonzJr eplied
that he had withdrawn the money
himself to prevent attachments and
had deposited it later in other banks,
a little at a time. These checks constitute
the only evidence so far dipclosed
of the hearings of withdrawals
by Pcnzi personally of more than a
few thousand dollars.
The days whfji he was paying out
thousands of dollars a day at his oft
fice and boasting that' he had $13,.
000,000 in cash to meet $3,000,000
in rlaims were recalled by another
check stub. It bore the words,
"$4,500 against $1,500." Pcnzi
smilingly explained to the receivers
? that it represented his side o:? a bet
the stakes of which were placed with
Treasurer McNary that 75 days I.iter
he would still be paying off his notes.
Ponzi smiled again when he answered
in the negative a question
whether he had any stock of international
postal coupons which he had
told investors formed the basis of his
new found road to riches. On the
ground that it might incriminate him,
he refused to say whether h? had received
any income from European
"? '"? i v _ i
sources or wnemer no na? a::y income
except that from investors who
t bought his notes.
Miss Lucy Mell, 18 years old. who,
since last April had been Por.zi's office
manager, succeeded him on the
stand. She said she knew of no
source of income for Ponzi except
what he received from investors.
When asked if she had ever seer. ir.
the office any international reply
coupons, she said there had been "one
or two there which we used as
samples for investors.'' She had
transferred monev abroad oiJv once
\ or twice, she testified, and she did net
know what the drafts were for.
The hearings were nostponed indefinitely,
to allow Ponzi to ro over
mf his papers for further information of
his assets and to er?ab-e +he receivers
to collect these he has disclosed.
