WILL SCRUTINIZE | 'CAMPAIGN FUNDS EXAMINE SOURCE RATHER THAN AMOUNT. Chairman of National Committee ~ Now hi Washington?McAdoo v to Aopear on Stump. . i " i Washington, July 29.?Funds for; financing the Democratic national j campaign will be received in any I amounts and party leaders will be! concerned only with the sources! from which the money comes, George White, the new national chairman announced today in paying his first visit to the party's national headquarters. Hfe-Characterized as "buncombe" the suggestion ' that campaign contributions -be' limited to SI,000 for each contributor. ' - ;-Party heads will scrutinize carefully all campaign gifts in order that "no obligation will be entailed on the candidate," Mr. White assorted, addin^Ktnat any plans to restrict amounts of gift? would be useless since sucu i couM be easily circumvented. The new-national chairman in dis-! cussing campaign developments de- j dared that Governor Cox as the! nominee of the San Francisco convention had become the new head of the narty:- * " With respect ' to interpretations placed on the recent conference at the White House between President Wilson and Governor Cox on the. league of nations issue Mr. White said there were no ironclad contracts entered into'and there was_a cer-j tain amount | f elasticity in the state-1 ir.ents: Mr. White said he had not -received an invitation to the White House but he expected to "call and leave his-card." He added that whether he saw the president at this! time depended entirely on the White House. Democratic campaigners will go before the country with the slogan: J "Peace, progress * and prosperity/' I ** "rTT' :j-- With this line ! Mr. YYnue- aniii;uti\.vU. Sc added humorously. ';We will be 'Cox-sure'of winning." "Campaign plans, as developed thus far, Mr. White said, call for a tour by Governor Cox of most cf the states. He referred to the states of Ohio, Indiana and Illinois as the "battle ground." The -nominee is expected also to make a special speaking trip through I New England. , The aid of William G* McAdoo, J runner up to Mr. Cox at San Francisco, has been obtained a? a speaker. Mr. White said. The chairman expects to see Attorney General Palmer ; before leaving- Washington 10 ask'.him to take the stump during the campaign. Selection of a campaign commit-1 tee-numbering probably 15, will fc- j .announced scon as will be the Westem inanager of the campaign who Will -have headquarters in Chicago. E. II. Moore, Governor Cox"e precondition campaign manager, Mr. White indicated, will be appointed to _ i -the campaign committee, x mancia; j arrangements wi-' be left to Wilbur Marsh, nationa* treasurer, who .lias been asked to organize a committee to direct the work. I ** ' - " I v.- * Mr; Cox iind His Divorce. Editor Clinton Chronicle: < I. read with a great deal of interest a.-statement from a Spartanburg minister that, he could not vote for Mr. Cox unless he was satisfied that Mr. Cox was justified 211 ftis divorce. : ? I firmly believe that leaders of the moral forces in the United States should assert themselves. Yon go to j a convention and you find ail groups i of interests pressing: their demands and in a way they are given a hearing. I believe, in the same way, moral leaders should make their der -mands. Hovrever, I am srlad to say that I believe any man or woman, after marttinj? an investigation, will feelj o that-he or she can conscientiously j vote for Mr. Cox. 1* felt that way before indorsing him for pre.-Ylent,; and I feel that I am as strongly op-! posed to divorce as anyone. T think; there are three facts that w'lt >n- J vince any man or woman that ^fr. \ Cox rmist have been justified in his! rr??i. vir. vi-fp maT*- ! divorce. V irsi>, mz> ivuuvt ..? I ricd again in something like- two j *'week3 after the divorce was granted, i Whereas, Mr. Cox did- not many again j for eight years. Second'; the wo- j men of Ohio have stood by Mr. Cox j and, I understand,' have always come! to his defense. And third, he has ] been elected governor of Ohio three j times, and his divorce has never been brought into the. campaigns, even by j "enemies. j A gentleman, in discussing the I matter with me, said: "You- know. 1 sometimes people are unfortunate," and added that he attended a social function in Cincinnati and asked the wife of a leading Republican about Mri' Cox's divorce. She said he was absolutely justified in getting it.' Of course, the Democrats wish that tney ] -diri not have even to explain why Mr. Cox is a divorced man, but, as Mr. Harding married -a divorced woman, he will have no advantage over Mr. Cox here. The San Francisco convention was my first experience in attending national political conventions, and I want to say t-har I was perfectly delighted with what I saw and heard. The South Carolina delegation wa3 -assigned to the Federal hotel, so we were all together. I have attended many church courts, but I do not think I have ever met men who tried to perform their duty more conscientiously and faithfully than the delegation from South Carolina. Every man seemed to be thinking of, thn interest of his country and party and nothing else; and they allowed] nothing to interfere with the performance of their duty. I think I can make this statement with propriety, as I was only an alternate. I was impressed with ?he fact tht*t the inen rang true, not only on political' View of tht- Clear 3. 3^20.
