FAVORS BROAD RiVER
BRIDGE AT SHELTON
Mr. J. C. Swygert, a Fox Hunter,
KKnows the Banks?The Bridge
Long Felt Need.
Editor The Herald and News:
If it meets your approval to give
me a short space in your paper which
we all enjoy reading so much, I wish
to state to the people both of New
?J counties that I
Deny uiiu i uui.v.v, >,
have read and reread the article of
Mr. J. S. J. Suber of Pomaria, S. C.,
on the subject of a bridcre across
Broad river and while 1 am not a
road constructor or bridge builder, T
am in favor of "road building." I
will say that I have been isvmjr very
near the banks of Broad river all my
life and have been a resident oi;
Peak for 46 years and am now 72
years old and believe I know the "lay
of the land"' pretty well, being a fox
hunter for a number of years. I have
crossed this stream on every bride
' 11 " ~ nn ovprv bridsre

Shelton, I have naturally covered i
scopes of the territory on both sides,
of the river between these points,11
therefore, I heartily agree with Mr. I'
Suber in regard to the location of
this bride, and when a surveyor ex- ]
amines closely the Strother location:
he will see the fact in the case stated!
to be as represented and we believe!
he will realize this point to be the <
roost practical place for the majority i
v concerned, both in Newberry and ]
-Fairneiu cuuuuw.
The idea of a bridge to span this J
wonderful stream, Broad river, is the. J
vision of a long felt need. The exe-i
cution of a building is what we want.j
and are heartily agreed that Strother j
is the correct place. _ !
Now as to the invitation for good j
dinner with Mr. Suber, we can vouch j
for this, also supper and breakfast, j."
With thanks to the editor for this ]
consideration of space, I remain, J
Respectfully, i
Jno. C. Swvgert.

! Plans Discussed for Development of j
Sooth Carolina?Second Session
Soon. |!
The State, 27th. !
The members of the board of control
of the South Carolina Develop,
ment board, recently elected by the
8 , several county councils, met in the
conference room of the development:
* board in Columbia yesterday. i
The outstanding developments of,
the discussions were:
" * n 1' ^ 1H/HTolAn. :
1 hst the aouin ocuuuna i
ment board must be carried through;
according to the proposed program. |
That the board is a thoroughly
democratic institution and that care-'
ful thought and much intelligent ef- j
fort must be given to the policies J
proposed for the development of the j
state.
That at the early fall meeting'
every county in the state having;
members should have a full represen- j
tation, and that at that time full
discussion must be held as to the!
work to be undertaken by the board. I
That the officers and managers of ;
the board report definitely as soon as
possible on the question of market-j
ing. , J
* * * " 4:.j.
That the board is not m comuu
with any other existing organization
in South Carolina, and that there is!
enough development wo: : to engage
profitably the time of any board for.
many years to come.
Fifteen Represented.
The report of the committee on j
credentials showed that 15 counties J
were represented and a quorum pres-!
ent. Under the circumstances it j
would have been competent for those j
present to have proceeded with the j
election of dirctors and to formulate '
a definite program of work, but it I
was thought that,it would be more in ;
line with the democratic spirit in j
which the board is being reorganized
to defer these important matters un- '
til a later date, when more full rep- i

the board agreed to reconvene on
September 10.
After the preliminary organization
had been effected there was a general
round, table discussion by tha
members. From the discussion it is
evident that the marketing of food
crops, the development of forage
crops, grasses and grains, the improvement
of the highways, the
strengthening of the educational system
of the state are very important
auestions which must be dealt with
during the next year.
The consensus of opinion was that
it would be unwise just now to outline
definitely activities for the year.
At the later meeting there is to be a j
full aiterdance from all counties and '
every section is to be heard from asi
to it*- needs. The'sre^eval nsc'?s of;
