SEVENTY-FIVE FARMERS DISCUSS HOG CHOLERA ? \ Meeting At Pomaria Last Saturday to D iscuss the Hog Cholera Situation a Success. Pursuant to a call by the county demonstration ajrent 50 to 75 farmers. assembled at Pomana Saturday afternoon to hear Dr. W. K. Lewis discuss the hoo; cholera situation in that section and the means of control. This is very encouraging to u> "when we consider that we had more farmers out to hear Dr. Lewis than we have had at some of the state campaign meetings so far to hear the candidates speak. The farmers were very much interested and showed a hearty cooperation by 17 cf them listing hogs for inoculation at -once. Many farmers have already had their hogs inoculated and many more will be ready as soon as we get a man on the job. Magistrate J. B. Bedenbaugh was also present and aided in the meeting materially by reading the section of law relating to the burning or burial of dead animals. July 12. ? > <$> <8> BOLL WEEVIL. <S> <8> <S> Ybe larvae of the cotton boll weevil were found in the field of Ryan Fellers on Saluda river near Simpson's ferry last week. These are the first that I have seen in the county since last fall though there may be many more fields infested. Mr. Fellers has kept a sharp lookout for the w evil all the while and has already begun to pick up and destroy fallen shapes. It would be well for all farmers to keep watch for the appearance of the weevil and if found immediately take steps for its control. Do not get panicky. That is the last thing to do. Try to keep your labor satisfied. We must have labor. While 1 do not trim* LI1C vrtwTi* will damage our present crop so very much yet it is a formidable enemy and one that is worthy of our best steel. If we are to grow cotton successfully under boll weevil conditions we must do/it by everlasting vigilance and by following the best methods for its control. The thing to do right now is watch out for its first appearance and destroy all punctured squares that you possibly can. After the public schools open the work of the unit will be confined very largely to the schools, to the inspection of the school children, etc. When we recall to mind the fact thai when our young men, "the flower o"f our manhood/' were called before the draft boards about 30 per cent, were found to be "physically unfit'' to serve in the army;-when we realize | the fact that to some inor defect that could have been easily eradicated had it been detected in youth, we can recognize the importance of this I phase of the work of the unit. At the close of Dr. Finney's re! marks a resolution was introduced i and carried that "the medical profes sion of Newberry county pledges its earnest cooperation with the county health unit/' Newberry county is to be congratulated in that she is one among mt eight counties in South Carolina that has put on a health unit.
