A Word Personal. In every community there are persons who seem to read the local papers chiefly to see what is left out. Instead of taking kindly to that which is in the paper they take unkindly to matter omitted. A few \ days ago one man said we didn't get \ the general news, as there was no \ mention of the going -of a certain person on a visit. Another reader said there was no Mention made of a certain commencement visitor. Still another remarked that certain other matters were not covered. And so it goes. Sometimes the reporter feels like offering the position to some one of these fault-finding critics and letting him try his hand at the thankless job. 'He will then see v how hard it is to fill the bill. We are . * no mind reader. } If we happen to see a person going or coming, we try to "catch it on ^ the fly." Certainly if we don't see p it, or no one tells us, we couldn't reasonably be expected to mention it. , Then again, no attempt is made to get the names of all visitors to or from Newberry; there would be no room in the paper for anything else. No item is ever intentionally omitted. Occasionally in the rush it is overlooked; sometimes vit is in type ~but crowded out until the next issue; often the reporter has to put up his nnf-o hnnlc and leave items unwritten oil account of late ads coming in at ? the last minute filling sp&ce, and when the paper is full it can't get any fuller?which is realized by all sane people; there are a few per^ sons in town who can not comprehend the situation. Another thing is, as the editor has already explained, the office is "all jumbled up" owing to the arrival of machinery for the big press, and we are handicapped in writing, for the time beng. P. S. Some people don't like to be mentioned, while others are very fond of being in the limelight; some like to be mentioned all right, but they are timid in telling the newspaper man. Some don't give a darn J 4 - whether they are mentioned ur *iuc, it being all right either way. We like to be told. COUNTY AID TO TEACHERS ? WHO ATTEND SUMMER SCHOOL V * The Newberry county board of education offers to p^y one-fourth the expense of attending the summer school for teachers at Winthrop of any teacher in the county who will attend the entire session and take approved courses. The expense as laid down by Winthrop is $36 for tfye six weeks. Those teachers who at% tend will receive this extra county onlv noon condition that they teach in Newberry county next year. The same offer applies to other teachers who attend any approved summer school for teachers in South Carolina but not to any outside of f the State. ? Subscribe to The Herald and News, $2.00 a year.
