THE FIRE WEDNESDAY C
AT PURCELL WAREHOUSE
The warehouse at the eonor of
Vrli'ru] and Nance streets, owned by
P E. Scott and filled with pro. inibelonging
to C. J. rurceil v.
' r.r-ar.y, was badly damaged by ac-1 '

wvioh also destroyed part of the con-;
damaging a great deal of that I
wfeich was not ruined. The building!"
contained a large quantity of hay,!
oats, flour, paper roofing, etc., damage j
sfe tihe same was estimated to be be- j
Tttwetn $4,000 and $5,000 which was j
-jKaetacally covered by insurance.
About 75 barrels of flour were dam- ]
by water. Mr. Scott had some
wsarance on the warehouse. The
fee started in the hay, supposedly by ?
rat, and not Dy spontaneous com- j
tacstion, the latter theory being disproved
by a small fire a short time
liefore on the same day in the guano
fconse at the rear of the store in a lit- ?
Sfe cotton stored there among some I
nitrate of soda, and the soda did not
burn. That fire did very little damage,
ss did also another small fire along
, tferre not long before the other fires.
'The company responded promptly)

of the warehouse and some of the con- ^
"tents of the building. It was one of
the fiercest fires the fire company
.fear, had to fight, the quarters being .
rfose and the intense heat being very t
trying to the ment doing the work,
trci they stuirk man fully,to their .posts*'*
: cane earned the praises bestowed byj
*rhose who saw the hot battle with the j _
fiarr.es. It was lucky for everybody [ J
Zbcii the fire did not occur'iri the dead :
bcors of a windy night.
I
This year's chautauqua management
started off to better advantage,
in that the tent is new and pitched in
a better place, on the other side of
ScotFs creek and just 'his side of the - residency
of Mr. and Mrs. P. E.! (
Scott, on the old park ground.
