.YOUNG WA? VET? RAN
^ TO BECOME MERCHANT
Newberry, S. C., May 15.?James
O. Livingston of this community left
tRe farm at the call of volunteers tc
Kelp whip the Germans.
> In September 1918, in the thick ol
a hand to hand fight, he/was badly
wounded and disabled so far as farming
was concerned.
It was a very much discouraged
young man who landed again upon
the shores of America. A day or two
after his arrival he met an agent for
the Federal Board for Vocational
^education. A short talk with that
official and he had gained new vision.
In a few days he was on his way to
a business college at Columbia. He

mbrcial course at that institution.
Livingston is just twenty-three
years of age at this time. He is
making a decided success of hia
studies and hopes within a year to engage
in a business of his own choos|
ing after he has finished the education
that a grateful government is giving
him. ^ ^
I SHAFT IS GOING

Kaolin Deposit is Said to Be the Most
Valuable That Has Ever Been
Discovered in Georgia.
The first carload of steel casing to
be used at the oil well of the Middle
b^-G?orgia Oil & Gas Company arrived
onri was sneedilv unloaded and
bUUajr unu ,f
rushed to the oil field in the western
part of the "county where crude oil
and natural gas was discovered several
months ago. The boring of the
well was delayed for several weeks
pending the arrival of this casing, but
now the big drill will go down rapidly
and it is estimated will average one
hundred feet a day until rock is
struck, and the speed will then be
fifty feet daily. The most modern
and powerful machinery that could
be bought has been installed and
nothing will deter the promoters from
first, test well. Late

Saturday afternoon the drill was
down about two hundred feat and it
is predicted oil will be struck between
fifteen hundred and two thousand
feet. Large crowds are visiting the
oil field each day, many prominent
people from all sections of the United
States are he/e each day to look over
the situation and a great boom is
promised for Washington county.
In addition to the discovery of oil
and gas a very fine deposit of kaolin
has been discovered which is worth
from twelve to fifteen dolars per ton.
This kaolin is snow white and free
I of all grit and is used in the manu!
facture of the fines? china. It is
| planned to mine this kaolin as wen as
the oil deposit. Some of our people
h are using it for polishing their silverr^Ware.
