"RA!5E MORE CORN AND LESS HELL* Eddie Jenkins' Advice to the Men Who Foster "Overalls Club" Spirit? For Work. Tix> Tvf?rf?r.i_ ,, Most of his friends must antici pate that "Eddie Jenkins lias some thin.2: to say about the "Blue Buckl< Brigade.' " And first i want to sa\ that, while I commend the spirit tha launches a movement, any move men to economize, I commend niort highly still, or would commend, th< manifestation of a spirit that woul< direct itself towards the stimulatior of production. Frankly, I do no' approve the method advocated an< practiced in the "overalls clubs' springing up in several spots in th< south. The desire of the men wh< are behind such clubs, is, I am con \ lident, all right and laudable, but ' ? \ believe they are tackling: the prob lem from the wrong angle. I don'i think they are going to benefit anybody but the manufacturers o1 overalls, and, in the meantime, thej will do injury both to the retail mer chants, who are entitled to some con in t>ip r?irfumstances. anc to the mechanics and other men wh< need overalls at reasonable prices. The wearing of overalls, is afte: all, only symbolic, and instead of ex pending ourselves on symbols if w< will all go to work with a will to in crease production we will accomplisl more good. Let us wear the overall: in spirit and work in the spirit tha should prevail among the worker: who wear the "blue jeans" in theii business. And, by the way, if th< men who properly wear the overall: would pledge themselves to do a ful day's work for a full day's wag< every day, there wouldn't be ' anj overalls clubs in the land, becaus< things would soon return to normal Let us recall the advice given ii Kansas in the days of Jerry Simpson "Raise more corn and less hell." If all of us in every walk of lif< will get behind the matter of in creased production and decrease< wrangling then, and only then, cai . we say, 14We won the war." Th< Germans, ana the other countries ar< not losing time, you can bet, in man? instances they are working eigh hours for the business they are en gaged in, and then a couple or thre< additional for "The Fatherland." Some extra steam ahead and thrif while the dollars are "small," bu plentiful, will put any individual or the safe side of the ledger, wh< wants to get there, and later thes< same small dollars will be regulai "he" dollars, and you boys who help ed make it a 100-cent performer b> increased production, will have help ed yourselves and the fellow on eacl side of you. The time has passet when we can or should live to our selves and because of that" fact th< outlook for our city, our state an< our country is" bright indeed. Eddie Jenkins. How the Contests Have Run. Cirpenwnod Index-Journal. Or.e of the visiting college stu dents at Friday night's oratorica contest gave the following contes statistics since 1914, showing tha Newberry and Wofford have won tw< medals in the six years.
