Charleston American, 19th. We
don't claim to know every name in
Newberry, as new people are always
coming in, but we suspect that the
American mistakes Newry for Newberry
very often in its personal
column.
Colonel M. M. Buford is the Newberry
representative of the Middle
Georgia Oil and Gas company of
Washington county, Georgia. The
company is doing a rushing business
all around, and many citizens of
Newberry county are availing themselves
of the opportunity to get in
while the getting is good. See
Loionei Jtmiora ai once.
Mr. W. W. Farrow showed us
some beautiful views of WinstonSalem
upon his return from the twincity,
which we enjoyed seeing. The
view of Cedar avenue is particularly
attractive, while a point of historical
interest is the Salem graveyard. Let
Mr. Farrow tell vou of the arrange
merit of the trees along the avenue
and of how they bury the dead in the
Salem graveyard, which spot he
says is especially beautiful at Easter.
We were very much interested in the
picture of the old tavern in which
George Washington spent the night
i>f June 1, 1791. Another building of
rrcat interest to us was that of St.
Paul's Episcopal church, as also were
:he buildings of the city hospital, the
Y. M. C. A. and the Masonic temple.

The preachers at Eeunettsville
iave come out cpenly against social;

.Yherever the crooked women are'
hey should be weeded out of decent
society. It is time to draw the "line
n every community where these
haracters dwell.
Someone was traveling College
street Wednesday night at about 7 :30
a'clock. The car was running?so
was the gas; it was running out on
the ground, the gas tank had fallen
from the car. Some college boys
took it out of the road, but they
could not catch the car as it soon got
out of their sight, going toward
town.
There is a nail "famine" here,
and now it is a nailless Newberry.
It seems to be the order to run out
of things. What's going to become
of the country when the last blooming
man buys an automobile, brings
his family to live in the city, and
everybody quits working in the
country? We will soon be without
other things than nails.

Auditor Halfacre will skip the places
until Tuesday when he will be at
Glymphville, thence going: to J. L.
Crooks' Wednesday and to Maybinton
Thursday, which will complete hi*rounds
of the county. He will then
be at his office until the 20th of
February, after which the 50 per
cent, penalty will be added.
People in Newberry are becoming:
somewhat alarmed by reading of the
new outbreak of influenza in othe.*
cities. Health Officer Mat-hews says
he lias received no order.-: t.i start
quarantining*, as there have been no
cases reported to the board uf
health. There are rumors of some
cases of the flu here, but several
persons are sick with severe colds,
and it is hard to differentiate between
bad colds and mild flu in the
first staff-s. And then, vou know.
| whenever a fellow catches u cold,
the other fellow says it is the flu.
