^ <8> S> A VISIT TO HUNTER-DeWALT & < ; <?" <?> ^ <$><?> <?> <$ <? <& <$ I had the pleasure of a visit to j Hunter-DeWalt school on Friday.' I| suppose that the ladies were under j the impression that the school would j not dismiss before 3 o'clock when the j hour for the meeting was fixed, but I they should have known that in this day even the country school does not keep the children in school *be-1 ? ? ' - t? .n i.: ii.. I yona z o ciock. in oiuen time me country schools had two sessions a day and a dinner hour, but now they follow the rule of the city school and have only one session and let the children go home about 2 o'clock. This is done so that thej children in the country may have the [ afternoon at home to help about thej work on the place. In the good old days when we had \ two sessions a day in the country schools we did not get out until 4 or 5 o'clock and then we went home and assisted in the household duties, drove up the1 cows, fed the pigs, cut j the stove wood, brought in the wood' j for the fires in the house and a suffi-! cient to amke the fired in the morning and did many more things, but in! time to take a trip in the auto to | the city or for a pleasure drive. around the neighborhood. And may f be a^ter a while we will be able to ; ' make all these trips and visits with- 8 out leaving home. But I was there j by direction of the executive com-1 1 mittee of 'the Newberry Red Cross ]nt chapter and I enjoyed my visit and! V had a pleasant half hour with the ' c teachers and the children who were! present. i , The hour for the meeting was fix- j -j o ?1. The teachers of the _ - ~ w ^ d< school were there anct uon. w. ts. .Boinest ^nd a few children and we T all spent a very pleasant half hour ^ together. | The school this session is taught "by Mr. D. L. Wedaman and Mrs. ; ] Henry Richardson and Miss Lera Livingston and the enrolment is 83 ^ and the attendance is almost 100 per Sf cent. If I had gotten there before the school closed I would have had a s< pretty 'good audience, goocl in num-.a * J ?m ofari o 1 fltof Dcr <2uiy guuu in tuc wtt?*v the Red Cross should reach. But the ? teachers are wide awake and I feel... very sure that before the drive is1 over every child in the^school will be a member* of the Red Cross. j They understand that the purpose of the Newberry chapter is to get j a sufficient number of members to c! p] carry out the plan adopted to have 1 a health unit for the county, and M they are interested, in helping to ;w bring this about, and the Jolly ! Street community may be depended f upon to do its full duty. ^ The Herald and News has already tj published the plan of- the Newberry ^ chapter of the Red Cross and the teachers at Hunter-DeWaJt underv. , ' stend the work and will cooperate ^ apd do their part in interesting the ja children and the people of the com-' ^ piuoity- I ti It was reported that two of the ; tj. children of the school had trachoma j ^ tfut I undertsand that they were tc taken to Columbia for examination 0] and it was found that only one of! q them was afflicted a!nd by prompt and i w proper treatment the disease will be : r( checked. , I^ The school is going to have an j entertainment on Wednesday even- j n, , ing for the benefit of the school and! f( every ope is invited to attend. There j will be something on the program to j N entertain and amuse all who come, j The purpose is to raise money for the j school. i n E. H.
