r EDUCATION STIRS LUTHERAN PEOPLI / /fram Adopted for Enlargement Newberry and Summerland Institutions. ^ The State. Little Mountain, Nov. 4.?As was i evidenced at the meeting of the South | Carolina Lutheran synod here today I the one thing which has stirred the ' thoughts of Lutheran people recently has been the campaign for education, the raising of $300,000 for Newberry and Summerland colleges. All the reports are not yet in but there is a snirit of hoDefulness that even more than the desired amount will be forth A coming. Twenty-five congregations ^fkhave reported more than their quota. W The Lutherans of Georgia and FlorW ida have asked for a representation in W the work of the colleges in this state and have volunteered to raise double Mhe amount asked ot them for the ' * i 1. support of this educational wor*. A number of visitors are attendiug the sessions of the synod. Dr. M. G. G. Scherer, secretary of the United Lutheran Church in America. of New York; Harry B. Gehrhardt . of Chicago, working in the interest J of the Lutheran brotherhood work; I J. D. Cappelmann of Charleston, member of the deaconness board; Dr. * - ? missifjn JU? 0? ff VULy UX llUC l* iuiijtlT board, with headquarters in Baltimore, and Prof. J. T.,Crabtree, superintendent of the orphan home at Salem, Va., are among the visitors. The synod has already- taken action providing for a building program for Newberry and Summerland colleges, which are greatly in need " ?" 'D^?+1U ino+itll. of dormitory space. i>vw Motions, report increased enrollment, ^ neither being able to receive all who apply for admission. One of the most interesting topics coming up for discussion is that of fFthe office of salaried president. The constitution will have to be changed 'to provide for this. This body of Lutherans has becoma a part of the larger body now numbering 752,000 members and that a rarrmaien to UUUJf id p:auiu?A^ _ ^ w double the benevolence of the church. Some of the great mission fields of the world have come under the superi vision of the Lutherans of America '\jt and the world outlook has broadened m as never before and the world is j looking to America for leadership in 1* religion as well as in commerce. At the opening session Monday oTT-nrvr? the Rev. H. J. | mgn</ iu mi? ? f Black, president, preached an effec: tive sermon on sacrifice and service. The gathering, promises to be one of the best ever held with much earnest aggressive work. The spirit of progress seems to be moving in the minds of the men of the church; who promise to rise up with a program o? business methods in church finance and operation.
