TIIE LUTHERANS ARE COMING. | It is gratifying to the friends of ] Newberry and Summerland colleges, \ the two Lutheran schools in this state, ] to know how nobly the Lutherans throughout South Carolina are re- < sponding to the call of the schools, j < It is now assured that the $300,000 J ] asked for the institutions which is ; ( being: contributed so cheerfully and so fully, will be more than raised and i these Christian schools will be put i in position where they can do the s work for which they were builded so ! ] much more satisfactorily than ever j 1 before. They will not be cramped all i the time and then they can pay the j < professors even something in the! j neighborhood of what is right and j 1 just. j j It is gratifying to the friends of the j 1 colleges that the people have done so | well. Almost all the congregations, 'i even the mission churches, have done 11 more than was asked, and the con-' i I * gregations that do not contribute ' \ even beyond the apportionment will j be rather lonely and will be the loser,' < because those that give to such' ] causes have a great deai less trouble: ] in raising money for local causes and < for pastor's salary than those that j do not. ;< 4 i Newberry will raise her apportion- ! 1 ment for the memorial to our boys.! i More than half the amount was sub- i scribed at the meeting at the count ] .house on Sunday afternoon. It is c ' - - . % 1 V 1 _1 J _ right and proper xnat sne snouia ao; so. We want to see a purely memor- i ial building erected in Columbia, g That is the proper place for it. It s should not be on the college campus, t however, because that will not be \ easily accessible to all the visitors to | the city and will not be seen by them, a It should be placed on some of the fc State's property out in Main street a so that every one who went to the t city could not help seeing it as he h passed up from the station. >0 And the building should be used f for the purpose of storing the records r of the boys who were in the service. I That is proper. And the historical t] commission should have offices in the y building and in that way could be 0 the custodian of the records and all fc records pertaining to the wars could c be very easily kept in the same build-; l< ing. In other words let it be really 8 atiH trnlv a historical building. In h that event if any citizen should desire j to obtain any record in regard to any h of the wars it could be found in the ! ij archives of the memorial building. ! X b The boll weevil has reached New- | p S berry. We saw one from the farm } f of Mr.. J. D. Nance, and the animal E ! * .. was still kicking though corked in a (j | ' /bottle. And some have been seen on j c Mr. Welch Wilbur's place just above: a p, Helena. h The beast has appeared in time to \ warn our farmers to plant plenty of; t grain and to provide for*the growing g of something besides cotton for an- \ _ " ? -- ? ?j ...11.1.. i" otner year, urow pigs ana catue and cheep and goats. By the way, we heard a farmer say the other day that he wanted to "buy some no horn goats, that they would destroy the weevil. Not mainly for that reason, j however, was the no horn variety wanted. Nor did the horn question have anything to do with the weevil destructive quality of the goat, but this gentleman said that the horned gG?t would frequently get caught in the wire fence and destroy himself ? i ? j Oy SO dOUlg, ctllU tins lanuci uiu uvu care to lose any of the goats in that way. - ! j There is very great unrest in all; departments. There never was a i time when there were so many strikes i and so many people wanting work i and so much work to be done and so few people wrho want to do it. It is a strange anomally, but it seems to ba tru.e that you can not get any one to do anything in the way of real! work, and yet there are all sorts of j bureaus to find employment for men! and women. The slogan is less work! ~ ~ J *-*->nor Wo VipqtvI n farmpr I ailU lllWiC 1/?J. ?? v, M & say the other day that he had long J been in favor of organizing farm labor and shortening the work hours, and that by so doing the price for the produce of the farm would have to increase. He argued that no other profession or any class of labor had such long hours as the farmer. And; that now and heretofore the farmer; never placed any price on what he nad to sell, but simply brought it I ^long and would sell at what lie could J cret and at the nrice fixed by some i one else, but that when he came tc' purchase cloth or ar.y manufactured irticlo the price was fixed by the ^ niar-uiV.cturer end the seller. }Ie 7 * vhcr.^ht by reducing production in his way it might be that the price i ould be fixed by the producer, and j herefore in order to cut down pro- i luction he would cut down the hours ' or work. J It looks now that the producer is roing to come into his own and that' le will in reality be able to get a loVvAV .cur rciuMi iui mo iftuvj.. 'VARIOUS AND ALL ABOUT. ! The boll weevil seems to be the 1 biggest (?) thing here now, judging ay the way people are talking about i the "doodleish" looking insect andi looking at her. Sunbeam and Sunshine; that's the way they run in Newberry, at the j apera house?Sunbeam comedy on Mondays, Sunshine comedy on Saturday. For the benefit of those who need it sve quote the level-headed Greenwood Intlex-Journal as saying that despite any temporary drops -in the price of cotton, all cotton men agree that there is to be a shortage of white cotton and that the price will eventually be better. Of ourse we are all aware that this "white" cotton will be short, but it is -ncouroging to read that the price will be better. f j One day we asked at the passenger! ticket office if the 12:30 train would be in on time. We were ro!d that it | Siad left Greenville on time and had j not been reported late. Agent Lefler j (he did not tell us this) is about one ; )f the most afccommodating and polite railroad men ever stationed in Newterry; but it is to be taken for grant- j ?d that, as Greenville is the starting, ?o:nt, the train leaves that fetation j ivery day on time. i "I Love You," a farce, which can j :>e judged to be the case by the name,, s coming soon. Generally speaking, the ones who ire so quick here in Newberry to I nock a show are those who have seen ! . show in New York. Now we don't! hipk they ought to expect the same i iere that they see in New York. The pera house stage is not large enough j or the scenery, and there are otner, easons. We are wondering if the coming of ] he boll weevil has anything to do rith th^ many land sales now going n.?Latta Observer. Not in Newberry.
