Many of the parents and friends of the school were present to encourage the teachers and the children and to * iv - i~ 1 assure tnem 01 meir support anu i help in the work during the year. Through the courtesy of Superintendent Wilson I had the pleasure of j attending the exercises and it was very nice to see so many of the fathers and mothers there, and to know that they are interested in the I school and the work of the teachers,; . and I know it was pleasing to the J teachers to have them there. And it means a whole lot for the school.^ Rev. G. A. Clarkson of the Methodist church opened the exercises with prayer and the children sang j | and then Mr. Wilson made a talk of j f encouragement to the children and 11 made a brief talk. And Mr. B. Mr. C. H. Alewine chair-! man of the board; Mr. Sims Brown! and Mr. Jacob Sease^were present as members of the board with their encouragement. Mr. John Oxner wasj prevented from being there but the j teachers may count on him in every j good work. / The teachers the present session j are: Miss Mayme Cromer, principal, j and Miss Mary Nickles of Hodges and j Miss Ida Young of fomaria are tne < assistants. Lefler received a message that No. 54 would be held at Columbia Friday evening until 6 o'clock, account educational day. Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey shows combined will be in Greenville next Tuesday and in Spartanburg on Wednesday. There will be large crowds attending from the borders of the counties. The jury drawing for the civil court will be conducted on Nevember 7. The county is allowed two I weeks of this court, beginning on the 17th, and one week for the sessions court, beginning the 8th of December. Some renters on farms had to buy j cotton this year to pay up. It has been a hard year with many people,1 although a great many more fortu nate ones are rolling in wealth it seems. October went back on her admirers this year. She gave us about the worst season of her hitherto glorious career, but has now ruined her reputation. We are glad this is her last dav for 1919. As there were over five hundred people going on the trains from this j city to the fair we have no personals j for the occasion. For the special 1 Southern train on Wednesday there j were sold 166 tickets and 200 for the same on Thursday. The regular C. N. & L. train on Wednesday there were 65 and 90 on Thursday.!
