CITY'S THEATRICAL SEASON 1 ENJOYS AUSPICIOUS OPENING Academy Presents "The Naughty < Wife," Three-Act Comedy, to Appreciative Audience. ;' J Norfolk Ledger-Dispatch. The Richmond theatrical season ; has been opened auspiciously. "The < Naughty Wife," a three-act comedy ! drama, was the premiere at the ; Acr.clemy last nijrnt, r.na it was received with a marked degree of pleas-1: lire and satisfaction. j< Laughter was the predominating 1 note of the production. The piece 1 ^was built quite obviously for that < purpose, and it certainly fulfilled its j mission. Humorous situations fairly j1 crowded each other throughout the;1 acts. Handled in less capable style j ^ by the very able small ( company, j' "The Naughty Wife" might have be-j come tragic in spots and that would j have destroyed the effect and some- j what marred its success. j / I A man's wife is about to elope witfc the well-known "other man," so es- j sential in the composition of the , eternal domestic triangle. Her bag'3 is packed and she is only awaiting j ( the arrival of her lover when her ^ husband returns. A serious iJlay ( would have demanded a scene and ! I revenge. But imagine the humor of j the thing when the husband proposes 1( that the couple go to his country, house, there to spend a honey moon, j ^ The husband does the humorous; x Yhir.g but not the natural thing when ' j, he gets into his runabout and hastens j _ to his country place to prepare things ^ for the arrival of the honeymooners. i ' 11 LL ^ ? -fV*/ > iri-fa i ^ tJUSt SE rne ~ OLner nicui i/ciio iiuv VliXV . that she will never, see her husband ! * again, a chafing dish is borne in 1 through the door, carried by the hus-' | Jband himself. This is one of the J cleverest situations in an unusually, clever lot. For, once he has the, J couple in his bungalow, he invents: ^excuses with remarkable rapidity and I * mi I ingenuity to keep them there, mere i he wins his wife back. One of the outsanding features of j the comedy is the brilliancy of the; * dialogue. Clever retorts run pell a mell. The lines of Miss Gertrude a Walthers, the "other woman," are j c especially clever and she plays her:r< -part with poise and distinction. Miss fi Iteva Greenwood does the best acting ' ej in the role of the wife. The per-JL dformances of Gordon Eldrid as the ir Siusband. and C. Elwood Farber -as the ' g; ""other man," are far above the aver-b] " -age. oi I n< Newberry opera house, Tuesday, ki October 7. j , im j he ^LEAGUE OF NATIONS J ha HELD BLAMELESS ca C . | W2 ; * ? *v"" Miccixsinni. She could not do it! g 4 l 48 hours even if she wanted to." i]V Senator Borah made sharp reply to S .Senator Williams, discussing particu- t Jarly what the latter said concerning h [ynchings. If lynching were confined, the Idaho senator contended, to those incidents mentioned by the senator from Mississippi, the human race might be disposed to pass them by on that reason. ''But the disease spreads and men are lynched for the most trival causes." he added. "The record shows 218 negroes lost their lives the first year of the war at a time when negro boys were giving their lives to the republic and displaying great heroism overseas. There was no intimation that they had been guilty of the particular crime on which men seek to justify lynching. "I want to say considering the ultimate welfare of the human family, there can be no justification for the lynching of any person, and the man ivho reaches it is sowing the wind -hat rpans the whirlwind, no matter low black the skin of the victim may :>e. If the republic does not protect ^he lives of its people the seeds are planted that ultimately will lead to ts disintegration."
