P. 6. ?AILLARB'S DWELLING !
DESTROYED BY FIRE FRIDAY
" I
About 11 o'clock on Friday the fire'
alarm came in from Mr. P. C. Gaillard's
residence in High Point. The
fire originated in the roof, possibly
from a spark from the chimney and
* before the family was aware of the
fire the roof was well under blaze, i
'Nearly every fire we have had in re-;
cent months has been from a spaji; j

falling on wouu smug 1C 1 v/vrjt.
^ cases the department has been able;
to save the building.
Mr. and Mrs. G-aillard lost everything
they had in furniture and
clothing, Mrs. Gaillard saving only
the house dress which she had on.
and possibly one or t o in the wash.!
Mr. Pierre Gaillard who had room?
there lost all in his room upstair?,
saving only the work suit he woro
and his army overcoat which was
down stairs. ;
i
<* The loss falls very heavy It was;
a' well built two-story residence and
ptactically new as it had "been errc'.ori
nniv in recent years. To repla.ce
it would cost five or six thousand
dollars. On house and furniture
there was only an insurance of
500.00. I
This fire demonstrates the need of:
at least two things in Newberry. First!
i
the water pressure out in this part
of the town is totally inadequate, j
While Superintendent Schumpert was i
righ^m the jol> and had his pump up j
to fire pressure and had shut off the
other end the friction on these small i
pipe long dead ends is such that it
prevents sufficient pressure at the.
nozzle. Another thing, if the j
department had had a motor ;
truck the firemen could have |
arrived much sooner and then they
would have had. the force pump if.
connection with the truck and the
lack of water pressure would have;
been overcome. And five minutes or j

The city should delay no longer in
the buying of proper applicances for
the protection of the homes of the ?
people and one of these is a first "
class motor truck. Chief Wells started
to this fire some time after the,
firemen and he reached the fire a i
good bit ahead of them.

In Times like These !
When the high cost of living is apt to put
a damper on one?it's time to "dress up"?
i ill
and squelcn depression.
Nothing builds up one's morale so much
as neat fitting, stylish cut, well tailored
clothes?and that's the only kind I make
for you. In these days of inflated values
?don't take a chance?but come and con- j
suit me concerning your spring wardrobe. Although
the clothes we build are aristocratic in style
they are truly democratic in price?with built-in
value from the collar of the coat to the cuff of the j
trousers. j
Drop in today and let me show you the "real"
woolens, that I work up into "regular" clothes, via
our expert designing and bench workmanship.
