[ffer ^tndU qb0 Jem Jtetered at the Pogtoffice at New* terry, s. Cn as dud class matter. E. H. ACLL, EDITOR. ' ' * Tuesday, September 17, 1918. * v/ ,<su ??I? ^ l" I We wrote Ed DeCamp some time ago that we were going to make an effort to attend the meeting of the Press associatiDn this week in Gaffnev asd we are going try to keep the promise at least for one day. We ar^ so situated just now .that it is al/ ?ost impossible for usx to be away from the office many days at a time. We can not tielp remarking, however, that we regret to see that the committee has on the program so many speeches from politicians. Per. sonally we are friendly with ail the gentlemen, and as for Bob Cooper we have.been his friend for a number of years, and we think he will bear testimony that we have, and in the days before he was nominated for the great office of governor, and that he has today no better or truer friena^ xn the State than the Aull boys, but we do not think it is in good taste tn have him making a speech at the press meeting. Neither has Senator Pollock any business there and personally we like him. And then thers is Gov. Manning who is to make ? speech lit all looks too much lik< mixing-fcjr politicians and politic* rjia nrpss meeting "when w( should go thereof the purpose, oi friendly intercourse. .. ifrue, Ed De Camp says in bis Gaffney Ledger thai there is to be no talk of politics ai the meeting. Maybe -we should noi say this, but that is the way it looki ^ * " to us and we can't help saying it. B3?j? iys * flackers. ' Uneasy lies the head that wears i crown.?or rides in an automobile 01 a gasolineless Sunday. The smallest man in the city yes. terday was he who ventured out ii a pleastfte automobile. Even if his own conscience did not give him thai guilty feeling, tb2 voice of the pub. * lie's did. And that voice was neithei still nor small. Almost everywhere v a person was seen evidently out foj a joy ride, and even if he appearet to be out on necessary business, jeer catcalls, shouts of "slacker," "Hur sympathizer/' "you'er helping the Kaiser win the war" and such patri otic remarss were hurled at him hj pedestrians. Those who did not shoui turned looks" of dis3alh on the auto Ists. Ahd if looks could puncture every automobile would have gone home onS-four flat tires. (Many thus ridiculed hastened to pul nn their mortor cars for the day. vow ing nevermore to run against public ,* opinion. But the vast number of automobile owners in the city did not need the censure of their neighbors to compel them to respond to the rarest of the fuel administration. I i An impressive memorial service ' : was held in Grace church at Pros' perity on Sunday afternoon to the ! j memory of Jacob Omerle Singley who j lost his life on the boat a couple of (' '-veeks ago along with several of his 1 comrades when his boat was wrecked. : I felt that I should attend the serv- j ice and I did not know whether or | j not it would be a violation of. the gasoline saving for ' me todrive ! Ill down to Prosperity or not, but concluded that it would not be so considered, because it would not be con- 1 ' 4 / strued as joy riding. At any rate I t went. When we drove into Prosperity < the police officer was stationed at the crossing to take the number of all machnes that passed. I asked him to send me a list and I would publish it so that the people might determine how well the request was being observed. I understand that the police officers of iXewberry also took note I of the number of all machines seen |. on the street on Sunday. There were j very few out on 'Sunday. .Some pos'' sibly that were not necessary, because 'most people could walk to the postoffice for mail and to church, as they had done many times before aiitomo- ( biles came along.; And yet there were a few who used this as an excuse for riding. ?ut public sentiment is growins" more and more against the use of gasoline in the face of the government request, and it will riot he many more Sundays before it will he so strong that the man who brings out his machine to go a few bloc&s for his mail or even to church will be so marked that he will wish he had ' never seen a car and that he had walked all his life. But I want to write briefly 0/ the impressive memorial service to .Mr Singley. ! It was an impressive service, and while the first to be held in the county, though not the first young 1 1 man of the county Jto make the su, preme sacrifice, yet as the war progresses we may expect many more i such solemn services for our young | men who are over there. <Pof.
