democratic cl'dbs of Newberry county
have been turned in to the headquarters
of the county executive com- j
mittee, and copies are now ' being

day late. The delay was probablv
due to the fact that the officers were

** is 3467. Of this number 393 are persons
who are engaged in the civil,

to be here on election day, 3074. It is '
evident that there has not b&en near ;
a full enrollment of the voters, <$- !
peciallv of those engaged in the servire

that of two years ago. We
understand that there are around

Mr. Eugene S. Blease has been acting
for the regular chairman in the
matter of getting out notices, re^elvins:
enrollment books, and getting
the information as -to soldiers and
sailors. The work of the county
'chairman, with all the new red tane
n.nd machinery, is getting to be quite
a jo'o, and Mr. Blease has been doing

the rules of the party the congressional
candidates can not speak at
the State and senatorial meetings unless
they did so after the other meetings
had been adjourned and it is a
v.-ise provision because the people
who go out to hear the candidates
f->r the senate do not care at the same
time to hear the candidates for con

The following itinerary was agreed
upon, of course subject to the approval
of the county chairmen who weret
aot present at the meeting as to their
counties. Only W. P. Grefcne representing

The time for filing pledges for the
county primary closed*at. 12 o'clock
nocn. on Wednesday. There does nor
seem to be much desire for office
this year on, the part of Xewberrv
citizens a*nd the campaign will probably
be a very tame affair. Apart
from the magistrates there are only
two offices to be filled, that cf mem*
ber of the legislature and probate
judge. There are only six candidates
for the legislature and three to be

judge and not more than two for
magistrate in any township. There
will be no necessity for a secon.-i
primary wftich is encouraging. The
campaign opened Thursday afternoon
at Keitts Grove in Xo. 2 township.
There are toom any meetings but they
are to be held in the afternoon and
there is not much probability of o
large attendance at any of them be
cause mere is to oe no oarDecue uus
year to draw the crowds.
Mr. J. Bedenbaugh signed the
pledge for the ilegislr^ure just a
few minnntes before the closing and
then decided to withdraw. He concluded
that it would be best just to
^iave twice the number to be selected
ro that a second primary might be
avoided but will probably enter tho
list the next time, two years from
now. received a great many letters
from friends in 3II sections of the
county urging liim to run and many
friends personally offered support
but it is much tetter to avoid any
second primary if possible.

C. MATTHEWS HAS RESIGNED
POSITION OF NATIONAL BANK.
Mr.
A. C. Matthews who has been
tvith the National Bank of Newberry
[or about four years, first as stenographer
to the president, and then as
collector and book-keeper in charge
af the savings department, has resigned
to take effect on the ^th of
August. *
Mr. Matthews will move to another
j
town and will be engaged in the
banking business with an increa.-e in
pay as well as increase of responsibility.
He is the eldest son of Mr. B. C?
Matthews, the president of the National
bank, and is popular with the
public because he is always courte
3us and polite and a gentleman. Any
man who is to deal with the public
and does not know how to be polite
and courteous should get another position
at once. Mr. Matthews was
educated in the public schools of the
town and at Xewberry college and
then graduated in a business school
and is a very competent book-keeper.
He was married about a year ago
to Miss Lillie Richatfson of Barnwell.
The Herald and News regrets to see
him leave'the bank and the town, because
we hate to see our young men
go away, but when they can get better
positions it is their duty to go.
And we wish him mighy well whereever
his lot may be cast.
The Presbyterial Missionsrv institute
will be held at Smyrna church
