'"KOSPE RO I S PROSPE RITY.
Prosperity, May 20.?Our quiet litr*le
hamlet has been the scene of great
activity lately. We had to pinch ourselves
to find out of we were really
iv> iPrncrmrifv instead of CamD Jack- *
f son. The four infantry regiments recently
ordered to Camp Sevier encamped
.'n the subui^s?that is the
caipanies that were sent on a o-day .1
hike. Simpson's branch had not seen
so many soldiers since th'* 60's;if then
?as spread their good tents unde its
whispering pines.
Prosperity extended the glad hand
/to the boys; opened their doors to
tthem and entertained them heartily. (
[ioformally. Friday evening the contingent
was given a reception at tho
auditorium?music and readings *.-rn
B?hed the entertainment and cigarm
' '
Kttes, cigars and lemonade were served
at this time and a package of cigarettes
was given to every soldier .
who passed through, due to the generosity
of a dozen or more patriotic
* citizens. j
The hundreds of khaki clad boy.?,
t^e nettlesome horses and the. mileIon?
train of wagons made us realize
i*ore than ever that we are in war.
r The ambulances and doctors that
i brought un the rear guard every day
I were object lessons in the Red Cross.'
r After seeing the equipment and the
handling of the sick, for one boy was
sent from here iback to Columbia?
ve believe that the safest place to be
ill if one has to 'be, is in the army, j
k The horses and mules were not
& forgotten either, for Mr. A. G. Wise?
? a firm believer in the Red Star?kept
casoline erieine busv hours over

We are glad the boys came our way t
?they did us good. We are sorry
that we can look for but one more;
i contingent, that of the Sanitary train, j
f which will dotjbtfless pass through
the last of this week. Their farewell i
greetings and thanks as they waved ;
good bye make every Prosperityite!

Too many years have come and

am not yet so old that 1
Have drifted from the world apart,
still can hear the helpless cry,
And mercy still can reach my heart
still can share from day to day
The burden that our youth must
bear,
iml I thank Ocxi that I can say
The Red Cross is my symbol there.
am too old to bear a lance.
Across the shell-torn Flanders' field

And death's grim terrors are revealed;

And 1 can serve them while I live;

I shall not be too old to give.
