London.?Much has been written j
[/out the hardships endured by the j
rews of vessels sunk by German sub- j
larines. Here are some particulars j
?aling with the plucky deeds per
>rmed by officers and men belonging
> all branches of the sea services,
aval and mercantile.
The first case is that of a passenger
:*amer which had been torpedoed on
Monday, without warning, as usual,

lifeboat, which had on board 31 per- 'j
ms, including two women and a baby '
>ur months old. j
Bad weather prevailed all that day
nil throughout the night, increasing
le plight of the miserable people. Pro- !
isions, too, were scarce, but what exited
was taken charge of by the chief
[Ficer, who doled out half a dipper
mlf-pint) of water to each person
ight and morning.
They had beon barely twenty-four
ours in the boat when the horrors of
le situation were added to by inadoss.
On the Tuesday the cook lost

Water Begins to Get Low.
The water was now beginning to
ive out and the boat's company sufsred
from intense thirst./
A fireman was found dead in the
ottorn of the boat on Saturday mornlg,
and the third-class pantry boy
ied during the day.
On Sunday the cattleman tried to
ump overboard three times, and sue- eeded
at the fourth attempt. The surivors
were in too feeble a state to
.-.T'a him ?it-hnn<rh thev turned the
oat round and searched for him. The
rater gave out on Sunday.
There were occasional showers of
ain, but everything was saturated
nth salt, and the little water they got
ras undrinkable. They licked the
woodwork, hoping to gather up the
aindrops
Then the$ broke up the water keg.
tnd licked the inside, which they found
;aturated with moisture, and delicious.
U 3 p. m. on Monday land v^as sighted,
)Ut it was a long way off, and by the
ime they drew near darkness and a
leavy northerly swell made a landing

xeel, but that did not matter much, for
t acted as a sea anchor.
At daylight on Tuesday they were
>ighted by a couple of fishing boats,
vhich towed them into port. The baby
iveri for some time after being landed.
The linen keeper died as he was being
ifted from the boat. Two of the crew efused
to leave tbe boat, having gonQ
nad. A trimmer died from gangrene
;wo weeks later.
The chief officer remarked: "I would
ike to testify to rhe excellent behavior
if tbe boat's crew throughout our period
of eight days' hardship and exposure."
The second case'-deals with a Britsh
oil ship which bad been torpedoed
without warning. The torpedo struck
t between the two forward thinks, and
t was burning furiously. Its engines
,vere still running, because it had been
rapossible to reach the engine room
ifter the explosion on account of the
lieat. Visible for iuilos through the
larkness. it looked like some fiery penT;int
Ann? across the face of the nisht.
Ml the holds had caught and a continuous
stream of oil kept feeding the
ire.
Crouched up in the peak, which was
lie only part not yet alight, were about
hirtv Chinese, all who remained of
Lhe crew. Death by fire or by water
>vas only a matter of lime; that seemed
.0 be a certainty.

filer's peak, but there was no more lifelies.
He ran his vessel close past the oiljr's
stem and as she passed rafts lifex?iits
and lifebuoys were pitched overward
by the crew of the patrol ship,
flie Chinese wen- told to jump over
loard. This was repeated throe times.
By that ti?ne all boats bad been lowered
to pic!: up the men in the water.
There now r? mained nirn* men in the
filer's peak, but there was no more lifesaving
apparatus <>n board the patrol
vessel. The lieutenant derided it was
necessary io : ! ..? h!m?e!f alongside
the ship and ia;:e off the remainder of
the crew. A speed oi eisjnt Knars ?eing
maintained. This was done. They
remained alongside, locked to the
steamer's windward how, for a period
sufficient for all nine men to lower
themselves on hoard this ship, which
sustained slight superficial damnge to
l*u; rd rails and upper-?eck fittings,
ren minutes after clearing the steamer
she was burned to the water line. ^
