jfc ^erolO aoD jost Entered at the Postoffice at >Te\r-j Ittrry, S. C., as Sfnd class matter. E. H. AULL, EDITOR. _______________? i ? ? i I Friday, [November 2, 1917. i EBBIE WATSON. We knew Ebbie Watson from the1 time he was a local reporter on the- j afternoon paper in Columbia until the j day of his d^ath, and he was always the some true L'riend and rvnial an<i high-toned gentleman in whatever po_ itixm he was foil ad. A lover of his State and devoioa :o ;ier devolopiat-nt | and advancement. During the four years we jpent in Columbia we became very close friends and that relation lasted to the Hav of his taking off. He was one. public official who never considered his own personal in ter-'sts or conveniece when it came to rendering servce to the State, and many times he has gone when he should have been taking a needed rest some months ago we told him he owed it to himself as well as to his family and the State that he roid up just a little, but he went as long as the engine would run, and it was run all the time <.t high pressure. He did a good work for the State in the department which he built up by his own efforts. Some one said in writing of him that when he was first elected as commissioner trat about all he had was a room in the State house and a little money for stamps and his meagre salary, but when he left the work the department occupied an entire floor of the National Bank building and was self.; sustaining. The State has lost one of its most valued and valuable citizens in his taking off, and he was just in zeinth of his usefulness. H}s place will be difficult to fill. To his widow The Herald and News extends its sympathy c:nd condolence and asures rer that she has the /vMKsrkiatirvn that, her devoted husband "was. taken while in the midst of his work, and that lie leaves monument in. the department which he has built up that will be lasting, and that he also leaves an enduring monument in the affection of the people o? the i (State, who will now realize and ap-j preciate the great work he did. _ i UPSIDE DOWN. The whole world seems now to be; alimost upside down and everything is different, and it is hard to .keep in i/L ii? a: monir ctr\r\ an tUH Mill me uuies, ow uiau,. fast are the changes being wrought. But all this doesn't, mean that we purposely and with malce afore- j thought, the lawyers would say, pub-, j lished the advertisements of MIm_ j nangh and L. Morris upside down inl the last issue, though it may have \ been to the best interest of the ad-| vertiser so to have done, as a great many of us have more or less en~?.rkei*i7 and wnn7d naturally turn the x mmm t, w ? m paper over, or turn ourselves over, J ta see whot it was about. We were! crowded on Monday with ads, and the! ad man was busy all day settting j them up, and we undertook to help in the placing of the ads in the paper and did not notice that the? wer,? turned wrong side up until the paper was on the press, and then t was let them go and make the mail, or change them and miss the mails, so we let them go. This means that it would be a great help to the office '* J--?"-amI/I v-in 117 nAf Wait li me auveriiseia nwmu vu?j until press day to give us the copy for their adst and then we could Irandle them much easier ond better tor the advertiser. / We have not mentioned the matter to Mimnaugh and we hope he is not o.ut of humor about the upturning of his ad. Morris is alright and is not kicking. We are printing both ads again today and invite you to see if they look the same turned the right way as they did turned upside down, and we invite you to visit these two stores and see for yourself the many good things they have to offer.
