Columbia, Sept. 21.?As was foreshadowed
in this correspondence
some days ago, it is probable that j
proceedings will be instituted within j
the next few days to test the recen* \
adoption by the state board of education
of textbooks for use in tlis1
public schools of this 3tate for the!
next five years. It is known that a J
well known law firm of this city has
been employed as counsel by a citizen
and taxpayer to look into the matter,
and it is not unlikely that the su
preme court, upon its convening for
the fall term, will be asked for an
Injunction and such other proceedings
as may be thought advisable.

'Hie contention appears to be
that the "board vent Deyona tne law
in adding to the list the num^r of
additional books which were adopted.
The civil coda of this state prohibits
more than 50 per cent of chages
at any five-year adoption. It 13
contended that while the board reall;
made less than 50 per cent changes
in the sense of replacing books in use
by new books, that the number of
additional books adopted, added to
the number chosen to replace books
in use, would far excced 50 per cent,
and that both the replacing books
and the additional books are "changes'5

The Cost to Parents
Any considerable changes :n textbooks
involve hundreds of thousands
of dollars in cost to the parents of
the state, and any proceedings which
may be brought would of course De
'based upon this expense in connection
with the allegation that the statute
was exceeded.
