Naval Radio Sehooi1 Norfolk, la. August 4, 1917. | To Col. E. H. Aull, Editor of The Herald and News Newl)erry, S. C. ! Dear Sir: \ Perhaps some wiii be interested! j to hear i.om a ^no-time Newberry boy j ! who is now serving his country In ! the L\ S. Navy. Therefore, i hope yen: ; will allow me a small space in The Herai^ and News for a brief sketch ! J of the life which I have experienced * | ii; this branch of the service. I enlisted in the .Navy on April z:, 1917, at Columbia, S, C. There ! was j detained a lew days before being j transferred u the Naval Station nere I at Norfolk, On arriving here 1 found the life of a sailor very different to the life I had formerly lead. However, having become accustomed to j the tasks and many duties l una mem j both pleasant and interesting. Obedr ience, willingness", alertness and j I '1 j cleanliness are the four fundamental; principles which compose this great! military branch and any other mili- j oi-tr ?rp-nmention that is a success. { Col. Aull, I am proud to say tn&t j out of the seven thousand brave men | in this camp dear old South Carolina j has her share. I rejoice to meet ' these 'boys who so quickly and will- j ingly offered their service and lives j to &ght for "The Cause of Humanit" < and Democracy." Among those whom ; I have had the pleasure to come it j contact with, were: Murray Rikard of j Newberry and W. H. Aull formerly a i , resident of Newberry. Both were well * *- If .. I and anxious to jjeL.au muiLj , help crush one of the world's most j treacherous tyrants, "The Kaiser of, Germany." Every man in the Navy is given I an opportunity of learning a trade, j provided he is competent to fufill the, position after having received instructions in that work. Since June the 12th I have been studying wire-! less. I find it very interesting tho there are same parts difficult to un-; derstand to a man who has not been taught the foundations of general I electricity. These few difficulties I; soon hope to overcome as I have been j* given the privilege of attending the : .wireless and electrical department of. Harvard (University for a course of, twenty-one weeks. . ... j" ,Best wishes for success and a longer life, I am, as ever, a constant reaaei>. "of The Herald and News.
