I A GOOD MA> AM) MERCHANT TO
HAVE BUSINESS DEALINGS WITH
H The Herald and News reporter, in
i| his dual role of bill collector, ran up
S agamst something out of the ordinary
the other day. He doesn't collect all
the bills, but divides time with the
H editor in this laborious work, which
|i is oftentimes harder than gathering
Bp ^ji^ps notes and writing them out for
??RpVaDer. But, the particular instance
" of collecting which calls forth these
remarks made it so easy and pleasR
ant. a task that we have to mention
it It was so entirely different from
E what we have been accustomed to that
it took us by surprise. We have gone
I to other stores from time to time with
I tills for collection. Very often when
I the proprietor was not busy he would
I pay, but if he happened to be busy he
would tell us to "call again." This
collector-reporter has always treated
that cordial invitation politely, alii
plough he has often thought that if

11, "the other day" this collector
ed into the store of J. A. Mim1.
The store was full of cuss..
The polite and accommodatalesladies
and salesmen were
at their respective places. Mr.
augh lumself was showing some
5 beautiful and fine good to a
>f pretty young ladies. It seem
f ed natural to us that he would not
ant to be bothered by a bill just
then. We "knew how it had often been
at other places under far less pleasant
and agreeable circumstances. So
many times we heard the despairing
cry: "Busy now?call again." realising
at the same time that the jarring
and untuneful "call again" had be*n
lengthened into several visits. Timid
Ily and fearfully stepping up to Mr.
Mimnaugh we said: "Well, 1" guess I
will have to call again, as you are
busy." His reply almost took us off
our feet, ~so unexpected was it. He
said: "No, sir, not a bit of it; no
man has to bring a bill here the second
time. I despise that way of tell.

When Mr. Mimnaugh spoke this
parable we knew right off what to do.
Confidently making our way to the
little office in the rear of the store
we handed the bill to Mr. Mimnaugh's
able and reliable bookkeeper and cashier,
Miss Lillie Mann, who so amiably
and gracefully, as well as neatly
and expeditiously, accomplishes her
duties in that large and prosperous
establishment. All we had to do was
to hand her the bill and tell her whati
! Mr. Mimnaugh had said. With a
pleasant word and smile she made out
the chec^ earned it to Mr. Mimnaugh
j and he signed it and brought it for|
ward with the harmonious invitation
j 10 cuuie dgam.
j The amount was only $21?large for
some people, but not for J. A. Mimnaugh?but
it would have been paid1
the same had it been $100. The point j
we wish to make is, that there was no j
questioning the bill, no asking to seel
copies of the paper to verify the meas-1
urement, no disagreeable part whatsoever
to it, nothing but pleasantness all
around.
Is it any wonder that we felt like
writing it up? Other merchants and
business men to whom we have pre{
sented bills could have paid as prompt1
ly and agreeably as Mr. Mimnaugh
! paid the other day. But no, they are
not that kind. They like to tell a collector
to "call again." like to show him
that, they "are busy." They don't
stop to think that the collector is also
busy and that it puts him to inconvenience
and trouble to have to "call
again." and probably find the same
person in the same or similar busy
attitude. And they also seem to for

when they send their bill collectors out
they expect them to return with the

tiser, and pays his bills promptly. He

one, two or three times. It helps to
make them .popular and he feels like
wanting to vote for such men whenever
they offer for office, all things
being equal. But away with those
little excuses of men who delight in
the stereotyped and worn out exp-resI
sion of "call again." It makes us tired,
j Now when a man cannot pay, it is a
i different proposition. We understand
j that thoroughly and appreciate the sit!
uation. We are speaking of the <busi|
ness men who could pay as easily on
1 thp snor as Mr. Mimnaueh Daffl. He
j could have said, "call again." But he
j didn't. .
1 This must not be taken to mean that
| Mr. Mimnaugh is the only business
' man in Newberry who acts with such
: nicety of manners. There are others
| who have been pleasant and agreeable
! in their dealings with this collector.
1 But the subject of this sketch was
I showing goods to some of his many
customers and it would have been excusable,
we thought, judging by others,
for him to have put us off?as
j 99 men out of every 100 would have
done in his circumstances. Hurrah
for Mimnaugh!

Col. Aull says we are a good collector.
We try to be courteous in presenting
bills, the only time showing vexsition
being when finding out that a ma.n is
simply putting us off when he says he
will pay tomorrow or bring the price
in himself, when he knows tomorrow
never comes in his case.
Watch for Mimnaugh's next ad.
