Like the Anderson Mail we sympa
thize with the exemption board. Theirs
ij not going to be an easy task and
neither will their bed be a bed or
loses.
About fifty per cent of those who
registered have already claimed an
exemption and -it is to be up to the
board to say who is to be exempted.
The board should be big enough to
use its authority wisely and well. Ex
^Tr?r*f?r?nc! nnt hp granted for
personal reasons but on account of the
service the party asking exemption
may be able to render. There are
those who have dependents upon
\ j
ti?.em and who can at the same time
take care of these and render a ser-j
vice to the country better by being!
1
lert at home than by going into the'
I
firing line.
The service at home is no less im-j
poriant than the service at the front.!

On the theory that the Devil must
be fought with fire we are going to
f i
Lave something very close to abso
lutism in this country in order to de
stroy. absolutism in ijermany ? ami
the danger is that ours may remain in
some shape or other after Germany's
is destroyed.?Greenville Piedmont.
That is true but in the matter of
giving liberty and freedom and de
mocracy to the world, it may be like
some other things the more you give
the mor? vou have.
The president has appointed the list
of names furnished him by the gov
ernor as the members of the exemp
tion boards of this State. That list
was published in The Herald and
vr^TTTo loot "EViHav Thp memoers of
the board for Newberry are S. J. Der
rick, John C. Goggans, J. M. Kibler.
yThe way in wii;~ the State board
of education made changes in the
adoption of text books for the com
mon schools and added new books it
would seem tliat they did not know
that the war is on. They displaced
29 old books, adopted 23 new ones to
take the place of those displaced and
then Jdded 71 new books to the list
- to meet the requirements of tlie course
of study. They had better changed
some of the requirements of the
course of study.
Newberry and tne State and the
country did ,well in the campaign for
the money fo rthe Red Cross work.
The one hundred million was more
than raised. In Newberry county the
apportionment was $7,000, hut as in
dicated in The Herald and News the
amount has reached more than $10,
000- It was a cause that appealed to
our people and well it might.
Our prayer is that our boys w:'l not
be sent across the seas until we get
something there with vhich to feed
? ^ fhom smH some one there
to look after the wounded ana suff
ering. It would be cruel to do other
wise.
It really looks sometimes that this
is to be a war of starving and which
of the great contending forces can
manage to hold out the longest with
t i
sufficient food will win the war.
It is stated from Washington trSat
congress will probably adjourn aoont
tie first of August.
The thing for us to do is to con
serve all the food stuffs that we can
and save the perishable vegetables by
canning.
There is a fine prospect-for a fine
corn crop in this county tn:s year.
A little rain would help in some sec
tions.
Talking about the location of the
new jail it seems to_us that the pres
ent site is about the best place to put
the building. The county already
owns two or three acres there ana it
4b close in and at the same time Is
not too public. Then the jailer has
the advantage of a good garden and
the difference in the cost of a new
site is quite an item. Better build
at the present lot.
