Frederick Sale, having received his
diploma from the high school, left on
Mondav for Columbia to enter the
Bowen-MacFeat Business college for
a course in stenography and type
writing. On account of absence while
at camp undergoing examination for
army service, he lost some school
work here which caused the with
holding of his doploma at the recent
commencement, since which time he
has finished the required work and
gained the diploma. We hope and
think he will make good at the busi
ness school.
Dr. George B. Cromer, chairman of
the committee to direct the Red Cross
campaign in this country, has a fine

and to visit their son. Dr. James M
Johnson, who has gained a national
reputation as one of the leading and
most prominent chemists of the coun
try. his principal work being in the
agricultural department of the gov
ernment, where his services have
proved to be of great value. Mr. and
Johnson enjoyed the tnp so

ure bent to points in Maryland and
at other places in surrounding terri

ry in the South Carolina contingent
which left Columbia last Friday for

A handsome memorial to the mem
ory of Mr. S. W. Williamson has been
erected in Rosemonr cemetery by
Baxter and son. The monoment will
shortly be unveiled by Pomaria camp,
W. O. W.. of which Mr. Williamson
was a member.
Baker and Oxner are now accupy
ing their new garage in east Main
street, having moved there last week.
They sell the Dodge cars, dealing dl
rectly with the fatcory in Detroit, and
hove the agency for Newberry and Sa
luda counties.
During the past week Baxter and
Son erected a monument to the late
Coroner Mose's Felker at Enoree

effort is being made by the war de
partment to induce men of mature

well known through his work as sup
erintendent of the anti-saloon league
in the State. He comes highly rec

./The alarm of fire on Friday after

'qroom house on Mr. J. M. Workman's
place near the edge, outside, of town.
The bell sounded, but the whistle
diin't blow. 'The blaze was not with

who was at work in a field near by. j
He fought the fire with buckets of]
water and succeeded in extinguishingj
the flames; not, however, until some'
of^the falling timber had broken his j
jaw. He put the fire out after his
jaw was broken and then went back

find out the extent of his injuries.
He went to Dr. E. II. Kibler's office
and Dr. Kibler found that the bone
had been broken in two places.
