jjtraO) ai$ gemi | tt*tered at the Postoffice at New-1 S. C.. as 2nd cia>s matter, j E. H. AULL, EDITOR. 1 Friday, April 20, 1917. ( That was a fine meeting on Tues-' ] day and the order was indeed gooa. j The parade was orderly and every | one seemed to realize the seriousness i of the situation. i : ? j. The report in the papers one day! < this week stated that the French haa ] killed 100,000 Germans in one day on < the 'Western front. No French. were; reported injured. At this rate it | "Won't take long to end the war. { ] What this town needs now more j than anything is some sort of organ-! ization so that the work which is to j be done in the civic preparedness! i campaign may be done systematically j ] and so as to achieve the most results, j ] A chamber of commerce or some; sort of organization through which! the county agent and those who are:^ conducting the campaign could co-jv operate and who could assist in a rwa\ that would be profitable, woulaj : be a great thing. Possibly the besti* organized county in the State is Sum-[ ter and it was worked through the * chamber of commerce in the city of | < Sumter. And Laurens has done trie' t same thing largely through the or-! ganized commercial body of the citv.j Money is needed to carry on the work -and it could be more equitably dis- j trfbuted and collected through an or-' ganized body. But somehow our people do not < seem to realize the good of an organ-j ized commercial body, or if they do they have never sustained one any length of time. Some sort of organ isation is sadly needed here at this time. Have you read the address of Presi- j dent Wilson to his countrymen? If! not turn to page fcwo of this paper and read it. If you have read it there can be no harm in reading it again. I This is an address that the school j teachers would do well to read to tha children and then have the children j to read it themselves, li is wen saia: and then it contains a message which all our people should heed. It has been decided to hold about! 26 meetings in various sections of the county next Wednesday night at 8:30 o'clock and there will be some one or two persons present to make short talks to the farmers and their wives who may attend. These are supposed *? *r\ Tioort tall-o aKanf cr?mp matters that very seriously affect the people of this country and which we very much fear the people have not yet fully realized. Corn is no* $2.00 the bushel and flour $12 the barrel. tAnd it seems that if some thing is not done to increase produc tion the price will not be the seriout? problem but the question will be to get the food at any price. Coopera tion and every one doing his part is the thing that is needed in this hour. There is no place in this army for the drone or the sulker. The newspapers iiad a suDmarine r fS tiie coast along about Boston on. Tuesday. And they heard the guns firing along the coast, A telephone message from Colum bia on Thursday brought the infor mation that Gov. Manning had issu ed a pardon to Mr. J. Townes Holle man of Anderson who some seven or eight years ago went wrong with his recounts in an Anderson bank ana left for Texas. And there are a lot of oth ?r people around the towns who seem o have nothing to do and It would -e well to get them enlisted in this novement of food production. There '3 no time to waste because the time 'or planting is here and if the crops} re not soon planted there can be j o harvesting. And only second in the producing jl ~f the crops is the arrangement forjl he marketing, and the preserving of j I uch crops as are perishable "by pro- I idins canning factories and teach-JI ing how to can successfully, that isr? ;o ha t-o preserve the food that is panned. j 'i iie Charleston American suggests .hat some one be appointed who shall' iave charge of the distribution and lie conserving of the wheat and other :'oo<i stuffs that we have so that Uie supply will last until the next har-: rest comes along.
