road, also holds a record for continu-i
ous service. His railroad career be-j
^ gan with the building of the ., X. &
| L. road. Through different positions
| ijte climbed gradually, until the death
of the late W. G. .Childs several years
ago, when IMr. Livingston was placed
at the helm. For a number of years
Mr. Livingston had been the lieutenant j
of Mr. Childs, and his selection as
president was the logical sequence
when that office became vacant.
?
^ Another interesting feature of the'
road is that there is but one wooden
structure on the entire 75 miles of
trackage. The one wooden trestle is
in Newberry, directly above the union
sheds of this road and the Southern
_ Railway company. The general policy !
Bof Mr. Livingston during his admin- j
stration has been to eliminate all wood- I
f en trestles as rapidly as possible by fill-1
I ing in gulches and substituting metal
supports or terra cotta culverts.

this roaa op?nea up an cAwcumgij
fertile territory. Throughout the Dutch
AFork section, the rural district is cut!
nrto exceedingly small tracts, farmed
V a thrifty and industrious people,
^^ho produce an abundance of poultry
J and vegetables, in addition to the nec- j
> essary cotton, corn and other grain
/?rr>ns. Onp indication of the fertility
of the soil and the perseverance and
energy of the populace of that territory
has been the rapid building of the numerous
thrivinf towns which have
sprung up at close intervals in the
Dutch Fork region.
N
Newberry and Laurens, of almost
equal size, are the largest towns that
will be visited today. Both have large
manufacturing and banking interests,
in addition to the numerous large business
enterprises. Clinton is another
-thriving little town in the northern exnf
tho territory to be visited.
To offset Newberry's boast of being
the home of Newberry college. Clinton
is the &eat of the Presbyterian college
pt South Carolina and the Thornwell
orphanage, both of which have splendid
plants. Goldville, near Clinton, is
kn the heart of exceedingly fertile coron
plantations, and a'so has onc c?t
